What You Need To Know:
BLOOD FATHER isn’t spectacular, but it’s a solid return for Mel Gibson. He’s an iconic action star and still commands the screen. Despite a few exciting moments, however, the plot fails to entertain. The characters are too rough around the edges to receive much sympathy. That said, the attempt to mend the relationship between the father and daughter is redemptive. The movie even ends with a positive statement, “When you owe your life to someone, you better live it.” There are also a few references to faith. However, an excessive amount of foul language and strong violence drag BLOOD FATHER out of bounds.

(C, B, Pa, PC, Ho, LLL, VV, S, N, A, DD, M) Light Christian, moral worldview of father and daughter reuniting and trying to protect each other from a drug cartel, with forgiveness, sacrifice, courage, discussion of “higher powers,” an encouragement to “have a little faith,” two different AA meetings are held in a church, mitigated by some pagan lawlessness from the main characters that isn’t rebuked, though living a clean life from drugs and alcohol is promoted, plus a politically correct conversation about illegal immigration, and a homosexual joke is made; at least 120 obscenities (including 95 “f” words) and seven strong profanities; strong action violence with multiple people being shot, with some blood splatter, man’s hand is stabbed, man bites off another mans ear, man is run over by a semi-truck; light sexual content includes references to prostitution, a homosexual joke, and kissing between an unmarried couple; upper male nudity; heavy drinking, but sober main character abstains from alcohol; depicted drug use, but not condoned, and no smoking; and, dysfunctional family and disrespect for parents.

BLOOD FATHER is an action thriller starring Mel Gibson about an ex-con trying to protect his estranged daughter from drug runners.
John Link (Mel Gibson) is an ex-convict, who is two years sober and barely getting by as a tattoo artist in the California desert. John’s daughter, Lydia, has been missing for several years. When she suddenly shows up needing help, John reluctantly decides to take on her mess. It turns out her boyfriend was a drug runner, and she had to kill him. Now, the drug cartel is out to kill her. As they run from both the cartel, and the police because he broke his parole, John learns Lydia’s in much more danger than he could have imagined.
Will the two be able to survive the murder contract on them. More importantly, will they be able to reconnect as father and daughter after all the years apart?
BLOOD FATHER isn’t anything spectacular, but it’s a solid return for Mel Gibson. He’s an iconic action star and still commands the screen. Despite a few exciting moments, however, the plot fails to entertain. Also, the characters are too rough around the edges to garner much sympathy. Harkening back to Gibson’s MAD MAX days, BLOOD FATHER lacks the originality that the best action movies from the 80s and 90s delivered, with flat dialogue and a visual aesthetic that doesn’t fully appreciate the desolate beauty of the dessert landscape. Little to nothing besides Gibson is memorable in this movie.
