FUTURE TENSE is an evangelical drama wherein college sophomore Michael Cummings is unable to talk about the Gospel with his family. His attempts end up in arguments, so Michael puts his thoughts on a cassette tape where he expresses his love for his family and describes the return of Christ as he understands it. Each family member listens to the tape and envisions the implications of its message. Michael’s mother drifts into a daydream about hearing a Rapture announcement on the radio and finding her toddler missing. Her husband imagines two “religion” reporters and a psychologist trying to explain the mass disappearances. Sister Callie thinks about being in an airline terminal waiting for a plane bound for heaven and trying to persuade the family to come aboard.
FUTURE TENSE imaginatively captures a young man’s burden for his family to surrender their lives to Christ. Although the film is well crafted, its brevity inhibits character development. Also, the lost world needs to be awakened to the person of Christ, who liberates men from the bondage of sin, rather than focus on the minor details of end-time prophecy.
