In KNIGHT MOVES, a deranged chess player challenges his opponent to solve the mystery surrounding a series of ritualistic murders. The movie begins with a children’s chess tournament pits an 8-year-old boy against a 14-year-old boy. The younger child loses the match, overturns the board and stabs his opponent with a pencil. Suffering from a nervous breakdown, the youngster sees his mother commit suicide. Twenty years later, the same chess players meet again, unbeknownst to the older player, Peter Sanderson, who is now a championship player. His childhood opponent (who remains unknown until the end of the movie), is now a psychopath who challenges Peter to a game of life and death. If Peter can predict his next move, he will solve the mystery and win the game.
With its intelligent and puzzling plot, serious chess players may enjoy unraveling KNIGHT MOVES. However, the “slasher” elements pervert the movie’s cleverness and puzzle-loving appeal. The spine-tingling terror spotlights women being stalked and stabbed by a psychopath while others are whacked on the head with lead pipes.
