NOW AND THEN looks at four women who gather together, drawn by a pact they made when they were twelve. Looking back, we see the girls deal with personal problems, things that matter to a child of twelve. They need to save enough money for their very own tree house and solve the mystery of what happened to “Dear Johnny,” a name on a tombstone in the cemetary. That summer they begin to see things as adults and slowly start to leave those carefree, childhood days behind them. The four of them form a bond that summer which will last their entire lives. They realize they can always count on each other and remain friends forever.
NOW AND THEN is a well produced look into a time right between childhood and adulthood. It is a nostalgic examination of youth in 1970 from a female perspective. The acting by the young girls is first rate, but there should have been more moments with the older cast. The story shows that the events in your childhood really do shape the adult you become. (Regrettably, the girls must turn to each other for help, because there is no adult supervision in their life.) There are a couple of seance scenes. The girls don’t really believe in it, but nevertheless it mars the movie. All in all, the movie is a cute look at an innocent time in the life of four girls lives and how their friendship is strong enough to last forever.
