ON DEADLY GROUND

What You Need To Know:

Steven Seagal once again stars as himself (or so he thinks) in another evil-big-business-out-to-destroy-the-world-for-monetary-profit motif in the Seagal-directed action film ON DEADLY GROUND. This time the business is oil, the pristine environment is Alaska and the little people who aren't going to take it anymore are Eskimos. Action without point, purpose or story is boring. Gratuitous, bloody violence is offensive. Unfortunately, this movie is both.

Content:

(NA, FR, LLL, VVV, NNN, A/D, E, PC) Pagan worldview upholding false religion of spiritism, spirit guides, animal representations of gods, shaman guidance, & the earth portrayed as our "Mother"; 76 obscenities, 26 profanities & numerous vulgarities; excessively brutal & bloody violence, murder, torture, numerous explosions, & gun battles; female nudity in dream-vision sequence; alcohol use; and, heavy-handed but inept expression of environmentalism & politically correct anti-business propaganda.

More Detail:

Steven Seagal once again stars as himself (or so he thinks) in another evil-big-business-out-to-destroy-the-world-for-monetary-profit motif in the Seagal-directed action film ON DEADLY GROUND. This time the business is oil, the pristine environment is Alaska and the little people who aren’t going to take it anymore are Eskimos. Seagal plays the same character he always plays, a secret agent hero without a past–a savior of the people, the neighborhood, or in this case the entire planet–only this time he is an Eskimo Brother as well (4th generation, possibly removed). Why they even bother giving his characters screen names is a mystery. Action without point, purpose or story is boring. Gratuitous, bloody violence is offensive. Unfortunately, this movie is both. Acting performances by Michael Caine and Joan Chen are mediocre. There is nothing of value here for anyone.

For all of his environmental preaching and big-business bashing, one wonders where Mr. Seagal thinks he would be without big-business Warner Brothers footing the bill for this pompous, self-grandizing, self-indulgent, violently offensive, inarticulate, and poorly made film. One thing is for sure: Seagal is a better actor than he is a director, and that says a lot. Think about it.
