What You Need To Know:

RING OF FIRE is a television biopic based on the life of June Carter and her relationship with country music legend Johnny Cash. It follows her through her younger years into her two failed marriages and finally her relationship and marriage with Johnny Cash. It shows her struggle to deal with Johnny’s addictions and her fight to bring him out of it.

RING OF FIRE is highly entertaining. It shows a different side of June Carter and Johnny Cash’s story. June’s delightful spirit and warmth are wonderfully shown by Jewel Kilcher’s performance. The sets and costumes give a good atmosphere for the story’s many time periods. However, it takes a long time to build tension. June Carter is enjoyable to watch, but there’s vary little conflict until Johnny’s addiction is confronted. Also, the beginning has some Romantic elements. However, once June and Johnny get married, Christian faith and biblical marriage are extolled, despite hardship. Faith in God and prayer are mentioned often, and some Gospel songs are sung. Caution is advised for some adult themes, including references to divorce and overcoming substance abuse.

More Detail:

RING OF FIRE is a television biopic of June Carter Cash, based on the biography penned by her and Johnny Cash’s son, John Carter Cash. It begins when June was a little girl in the late 1930s, when she would travel with her family singing songs on the radio and in concerts. Even though she was the youngest of the three sisters, as she grew older, she got a reputation for being quite the performer because of her comedy routines.

June eventually married singer Carl Smith, with whom she had a daughter. However, their marriage falls apart, and they divorce a few years later. Through all this, June performs many times with Johnny Cash, whose popularity is rising quickly. Even though both of them are married, they exhibit interest in one another. June later remarries a racecar driver and has another daughter, but this marriage too seems doomed, and they divorce nine years later.

Two years later, Johnny proposes to June, and she accepts. They travel and perform concerts together, June writing many of their songs. However, Johnny’s problem with drugs and alcohol becomes harder to hide. It gets so bad that June starts to wonder whether he will ever give them up. Can Johnny overcome his addiction? Can June stick with him long enough until he changes?

RING OF FIRE is highly entertaining and shows a different side of the June Carter and Johnny Cash story. June’s delightful spirit and warm presence is wonderfully shown by Jewel Kilcher’s performance. The sets and costumes give a good atmosphere for the many time periods of the movie. One of the main weaknesses is in how long it takes to build up any sort of tension. June Carter is enjoyable to watch, but there’s hardly any conflict until Johnny’s addiction is confronted.

RIGN OF FIRE has a mixed pagan worldview with both Romantic and moral elements. When June is married to her previous husbands, there’s romantic tension between her and Johnny when they perform. Both of their other marriages just seem to be in the way of their “true love.” However, once they do finally get married, the movie portrays a relationship that not only sticks together through thick and thin, but also one that’s rooted in Jesus Christ, even through the tough trials. Faith in God and prayer are mentioned several times, and several Gospel songs are sung. That said, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for RING OF FIRE, due to the stories adult themes, including pill and alcohol abuse.
