What You Need To Know:
THE HOAX is a little long and complicated, but it is entertaining, funny and suspenseful. The cast is excellent, especially Richard Gere, Alfred Molina and Marcia Gay Harden. THE HOAX is a fascinating portrait of a charming, audacious man with some big moral flaws. The movie becomes more fascinating as one explores its themes. THE HOAX does contain, however, some very strong foul language and sexual references, so MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
Content:
(B, RH, LLL, V, S, N, AA, D, M) Light moral worldview about a charming, but deceitful, writer who almost gets away with the hoax of the century, plus some revisionist history, most of which is relatively inconsequential on a macro level so that the basic spirit of the truth seems to be retained; at least 42 obscenities (including many "f" words), 10 strong profanities and 11 light profanities; some violence includes men throw man from high balcony, and he lands in pool, and ominous scenes threatening violence; implied adultery in one scene when man meets woman in her bedroom (they are both married to different people) and implied fornication and adultery by two men with two women who appear to be prostitutes; upper male nudity; alcohol use and drunkenness; smoking; and, lying, fraud, stealing, deceit, and forgery are exposed, but the movie invents a slander against at least one character, an author, who is now dead.
