THE MAN

"Boring Police Buddy Movie"

What You Need To Know:

THE MAN is a buddy movie in which Samuel L. Jackson plays the hardboiled undercover agent, and funnyman Eugene Levy is a hapless dental equipment salesman who unwittingly gets caught up in a police bust of gun dealers. Levy’s character Andy Fidler accidentally accepts a bag that holds a gun and a cell phone. The bag was intended for Jackson’s character Derrick Vann, who is an undercover FBI agent working to expose a gun smuggling scheme. Agent Vann must take Andy along with him, since he’s now in contact with the crooks. Naturally, Vann and Andy are polar opposites, but Vann can’t let him leave, or the investigation will be over and the bad guys will escape.

There is frequent foul language, including S-H words. The movie’s worldview is indeterminate, although Andy is anxious to get back to his family and talks about them often. Also, Vann is an honest cop who works hard to maintain order and lock up bad guys. The plot is pretty thin, and Levy isn’t on screen enough to make it funny. There is nothing in THE MAN to earn your attention, or your money at the box office.

Content:

(B, LLL, V, S, M) Very light moral worldview with attention to justice and family; 34 obscenities, plus some phrases that sound comedically similar to obscenities, and two profanities; comedic violence with man hit in head, men shot in rear and corpse present at crime scene; light sexual innuendo; no nudity, alcohol or smoking; and, lying by cop to keep his cover.

More Detail:

THE MAN is a buddy movie in the guise of a police action movie. Samuel L. Jackson plays the hardboiled undercover agent, and funnyman Eugene Levy is the hapless dental equipment salesman who unwittingly gets caught up in a police bust of gun dealers.

Levy plays Andy Fidler, a naïve dad from Wisconsin who is out of his element in Detroit, where he’s attending a dentist convention. Eating in a diner, Andy accidentally accepts a bag that holds a gun and a cell phone. The bag was intended for Jackson’s character Derrick Vann, who is an undercover FBI agent working to expose a gun smuggling scheme. Agent Vann must then take Andy along with him, since he’s now in contact with the crooks.

Naturally, Vann and Andy are polar opposites, as Agent Vann is a tough guy who means business, and Andy can’t stop talking – about dentistry, his family, traveling, cell phones, anything that comes to mind. Andy wants to escape and get home safely, but Vann can’t let him leave, or the investigation will be over, and the bad guys will escape.

This plot is pretty thin, so THE MAN relies on its two stars. Eugene Levy is often funny but doesn’t have enough screen time to save the movie. Too much time is spent on the cop drama with Jackson, but this isn’t a real action movie; it’s a bungled comedy.

There is frequent foul language from Jackson, much of it light, with some ‘sh’ words. The movie’s worldview is mostly indeterminate, although Andy is anxious to get back to his family and talks about them often. Also, Vann is an honest cop who works hard to maintain order and get dishonest people into jail.

Comfortable working with clichés, THE MAN was a fine idea but doesn’t have a script. There are no elements here to earn your attention, or your money at the box office.
