THE VATICAN TAPES

What You Need To Know:

THE VATICAN TAPES opens with a priest at the Vatican talking with a cardinal in a Vatican church, as they discuss the case of Angela, a possessed woman in Los Angeles. An opening credits note has already told the audience that the Vatican has been filming all exorcism activity for the past several decades, so the priests have seen footage of the possessed woman. They agree it’s time to assign a priest to investigate and exorcise Angela. That priest is Father Lozano, a young and quiet priest, who slips into Angela’s life while she’s in the hospital for a mysterious cut on her thumb. Eventually, Angela’s case unleashes powerful demonic forces.

THE VATICAN TAPES appears to be on the side of the priest and good, but, eventually, evil triumphs, and all good is vanquished. Dwelling on occult material is bad enough, but letting it win is reprehensible. Much of Angela’s behavior during her possession scenes is sacrilegious as well. There’s also an excessive amount of demonic violence, with some lewd moments. Ultimately, THE VATICAN TAPES is a very harmful, abhorrent movie.

More Detail:

THE VATICAN TAPES is the story of a quiet priest assigned to find out whether a young woman needs an exorcism, only to find she’s filled with evil. THE VATICAN TAPES has a strong occult worldview where good ultimately is ineffectual against demonic evil, mitigated slightly by positive portrayals of priests fighting demons.

The story opens with a priest (Djimon Hounsou) at the Vatican talking with a cardinal in a Vatican church, as they discuss the case of Angela, a possessed woman in Los Angeles. An opening credits note has already told the audience that the Vatican has been filming all exorcism activity for the past several decades, so these priests have seen footage of the woman. They agree it’s time to assign a priest to investigate and exorcise her.

That priest is Father Lozano (Michael Peña), a young and quiet priest who slips into Angela’s life while she’s in the hospital for a mysterious cut on her thumb. As her father and boyfriend try to guide her through a birthday weekend, she starts turning hot and thirsty, and exhibiting suddenly violent and irrational behavior. She appears to spur a giant room of mental patients to kill themselves and each other before appearing to lapse into a coma and die.

The movie follows attempts to figure out what’s going wrong with Angela and to save her from her weird behavior. She not only turns out to be demonically possessed but also to be the Antichrist. Thus, begins a final showdown exorcism that could have enormous consequences.

THE VATICAN TAPES appears to be on the side of the priest and good, but, ultimately, evil triumphs, and all good is vanquished.
