What You Need To Know:
This movie is slow but visually rich. Each shot has layers of meaning. However, the slow pace and the tragic ending will not endear this Chinese movie to a large American audience. As it is, THE WORLD is an interesting curiosity that will quickly pass from the scene. THE WORLD also contains sexual elements, varied spiritual content and is set in a Communist society where money seems to reign.

THE WORLD is set in an amusement park in Peking, where the leading monuments and tourist meccas of the world are recreated. This World Park is like Epcot Center and Las Vegas, with the Eiffel Tower, the New York Skyline, the Great Pyramid, the Arc de Triumphe, the Taj Mahal, and other tourist spots recreated, usually on a smaller scale. Tao is a young dancer who works at The World Park. She comes out with other dancers in Las Vegas type costumes representative of different countries. After performing in the really big show, she takes the little tram to each country to perform.
Tao is dating a security guard named Taisheng, who has more ambition than Tao. Taisheng is running favors for a loan shark. Some of the female dancers at the park are also call girls and prostitutes for wealthy Chinese businessmen. The audience watches four Russian women hand their passports to their male pimp and get indoctrinated into the ways of The World Park.
Taisheng wants to have sex with Tao but she refuses. Then, he starts to show interest in a married woman whose husband escaped to France. Tao tries to win him back through sex.
