In “Path to Paradise,” the third episode of THE MESSENGERS, the six messengers try to find the Horseman of War Joshua saw in his vision. When they follow a few leads, it’s apparent that the devil is also looking for the Horseman. They conclude that the Horseman is either an Afghani prime minister or a U.S. senator. Meanwhile, Vera is following her science leads and trying to find her son who she’s learned is still alive.
“Path to Paradise” is a terrible episode. It begins in a strip club. Following this scene is some horrendously wooden dialogue, cheesy flashbacks and emotionless, flat conflict. Making matters worse, the episode hints that a U.S. senator who gives a patriotic speech at a funeral could be the Horseman of War. Not only does this unnecessary and hysterically clichéd politically correct revelation betray the intended audience, but it also muddles the narrative. “Path to Paradise” does have a few positive Christian references, but this episode could lose a lot of the audience for THE MESSENGERS with the heavier content and poor execution. Extreme caution is advised.
