mountain base where he lives. Iris keeps Augustine company, but when they have to move to the top of the mountain, their lives are put at risk.
Starring George Clooney, THE MIDNIGHT SKY is an exciting movie with lots of jeopardy and suspense. The performances are strong. Clooney also does a good job as director. MIDNIGHT SKY’s story of a decaying Earth has an undertone of environmentalism, but the dialogue doesn’t stress this issue. In fact, the movie’s environmentalist message is mitigated by strong moral elements, especially a clear pro-life message about having children. However, THE MIDNIGHT SKY also has some violence, brief foul language and implied extramarital sex. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

More Detail:
THE MIDNIGHT SKY is a science fiction movie about a scientist who believes he’s found a new planet for humanity to inhabit when the Earth runs out of breathable air. THE MIDNIGHT SKY is an exciting movie with lots of jeopardy, but it has a mixed worldview with some environmentalism, a strong pro-life message, some violence, brief foul language, and some miscellaneous immorality.
Augustine is a scientist who’s very invested in trying to find a new planet. Even after falling in love, he’s only focused on his work and discovery. When the woman he loves comes to him and says she’s pregnant but has lost the child, he’s sad but still focused on what he wants to find.
Years later, Augustine is working alone on an Artic base, and the air is compromised. Multiple spaceships have gone out to find K23, the planet Augustine believes is out there. None of the spaceships have returned, but one is now on its way back to Earth with news of a very successful mission. The ship has multiple crew members on it, including a pregnant woman named Sully. Sully’s excited about the future, K23 and her baby. Each day Sully tries to call Earth to see if she gets a response. One day she hears Augustine’s voice.
Meanwhile, Augustine finds a little girl on the Arctic base who’s been left behind. She doesn’t talk but shows him that her name is Iris. Iris is a beautiful little girl who follows Augustine and brings him comfort. Sadly, though, Augustine is dying and must get intensive infusion treatments.
Augustine finds out the air on Earth has gotten so bad that he and Iris must travel up the mountain to find better air. Will Augustine and Iris make it up the mountain and find breathable air? Will Sully’s spaceship get back to Earth to complete their mission and save Augustine and Iris?
THE MIDNIGHT SKY is a well-made science fiction movie, with lots of jeopardy and suspense. The movie is based on a book and thus has a few different levels that include some flashbacks. The movie’s performances are appealing and interesting, and George Clooney also does a good job as the director.
THE MIDNIGHT SKY has an undertone of environmentalism. For example, environmentalists believe the Earth could decay totally and that the air can become unbreathable because of pollution. This is the movie’s assumption, but there’s only one line of dialogue about not taking care of the Earth. The movie’s environmentalism is also mitigated by strong moral elements, including a very clear pro-life message regarding pregnancy and children. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution, however, for the environmentalist undertone, some violence, brief foul language, drunkenness, and implied extramarital sex in THE MIDNIGHT SKY.
