More Detail:

VINDICATION is a faith-based crime drama series distributed by Angel Studios. The series follows Gary Travis (Todd Terry), a Texan police detective who later converted to Christianity. In season four, Gary retires from the force and transitions into his new calling: running his own private investigation business. Gary struggles to adapt to this volatile market. Meanwhile, Gary goes on a wild goose chase over the whereabouts of his father, who was previously presumed dead. Will Gary remain vigilant?

In the premiere episode of season four, “Change,” the FBI apprehends an innocent young man for carrying a bomb in his backpack. Convinced there’s another suspect behind the bomb, Gary helps with the investigation. Meanwhile, Gary struggles to find his true purpose following his abrupt retirement from the police force. At the same time, Gary gets into a heated reunion with his dementia-riddled mother Doris. She unknowingly sets Gary on a quest to find his long-lost father.

“Change” is an excellent start to season four. Its hallmarks include solid acting, great cinematography, and spectacular writing. From a production standpoint, VINDICATION feels “prestige” without relying on expensive visual effects. The real standout is Todd Terry’s performance as the lead character. Detective Gary feels like a real “flawed man” who’s earnestly trying to reconnect with God in times of stress. The actor is able to convey Gary’s internal battles with such grace, he steals the show.

In episode two, “Open for Business,” Gary is tasked with cracking the psychotic mind of a socially-reclusive teenage boy. Meanwhile, Gary’s private investigation business hits issues with permits, lack of income, and requests from divorce-related customers. At the same time, he screens a new secretary, a single-mother atheist who openly challenges Gary’s Christian leanings. Will Gary’s new venture be able to stay afloat?

Episode two is a great exploration into Gary’s spiritual convictions. It exposes the show’s exorbitantly Christian moral leaning. The protagonist is a Christian convert who frequently mentions biblical teachings. In all three episodes, Gary briefly leads a men’s prayer group, prays to God in his downtime, and discusses his beliefs with his agnostic secretary. Gary kneels in front of his secretary and graces her with a blessing. Moreover, he openly quotes passages from the Bible. Lastly, he is a loving husband and frequently confides in his wife. The second episode is staunchly pro-Christian in moving way that bring tears.

The story continues in episode three, “Welcome to the Party.” Gary’s personal quest to find his long-lost father reaches a dead end. Meanwhile, a multi-million dollar company approaches Gary with a high-paying task: to infiltrate a corporate fundraiser and find dirt on Eli Workshire, a corrupt executive. With the help of an old cop friend, Gary spies on Workshire at the party. Yet, Gary’s secretary suspects it’s a trap. Will they make it out alive?

Episode three is well-written. However, it shines a light on the season’s objectionable content. There is no on-screen consumption of drugs, alcohol or smoking. Also, foul language is absent. However, the protagonist exposes a company employee of financial embezzlement and selling drugs. In episodes one and two, the hero and law enforcement thwart two separate bombing attempts. A SWAT team captures an alleged bomber and arrests him for bringing home-made pipe bombs to school. A police officer steals a private guard’s pistol and ammo from under his nose. Lastly, the hero’s secretary looks at gossip websites while on the job.

The first three episodes of season four of VINDICATION launch with a bang. This season features top-notch acting, excellent editing, and writing that does not talk down to the viewer. Moreover, these episodes build upon the show’s morally durable Christian worldview. Detective Travis openly prays to God for advice, does good deeds without seeking payment, and prays a blessing to an agnostic mother. However, the season features two terrorist bombing plots and references to financial embezzlement involving drugs. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children, including young teenagers.
