Attitudes Toward Marriage and Family Grow Negative

Attitudes toward marriage and family have dramatically changed for the worse in the United States since 1960, according to a new Pew Research Center study.

This could be due to the fact that the 78 million Millennials (people born between 1980 and 2000) are the least religious generation in American history, according to Thom and Jess Rainer in their book The Millennials: Connecting to America’s Largest Generation.

In 1960 72% of the U.S. adult population was married. That number dropped to 52% by 2008. Another startling statistic is that the number of children born to unmarried mothers has risen over the last 50 years from 5% to 41%.

Despite these shocking numbers, 76% still say their family is the most important element of their lives.
