What You Need To Know:

THE WOODSMAN stars Kevin Bacon as Walter, a convicted pedophile who gets out of jail after 12 years. Walter gets a job and finds a girlfriend at work, but he still struggles with his desires to seduce young girls. It doesn’t help that he’s chosen an apartment overlooking a grade school. When word leaks out at work about his past, his co-workers shun him, including his girlfriend. Walter is tempted to repeat his crime. Meanwhile, a local policeman harasses him, and Walter intervenes when he sees another pedophile stalking the nearby school.

THE WOODSMAN is well-produced but shows signs of the kind of dramatic pretension afflicting many independent movies, especially movies by filmmakers straight out of film school. The main problem, however, is that Walter the pedophile is more sympathetic than the people who reject him because of the nature of his crime. He is also more sympathetic than the local policeman, who’s just doing his job by keeping a close eye on Walter. Scenes of Walter stalking a young girl are provocative in the worst sense. This abhorrent handling of a sensitive subject is accompanied by strong foul language, depicted fornication and nudity.
