After a long period with no news about SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE, Sony has finally revealed the movie is now in the animation stage.
The movie has had several challenges, mainly from the SAG-AFTRA strike. Sony Pictures pushed the release date from March 29, 2024, to June 4, 2027. The producers want perfection on the project, so they didn’t want to rush it, CBR reported.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Animation president Damien de Froberville said, “On SPIDER-VERSE, I was like, ‘How are they going to top [2023’s] ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE? And then we’re looking at art and design [for 2027’s BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE], and it’s really blowing my mind. We look at a lot of art, but what we saw at the last presentation, I’m like, ‘Wow.’”
He confirmed they are in the animation phase.

He added, “We made some changes to the pipeline to, not avoid — because [directors] Chris [Miller] and Phil [Lord] are always going to iterate late — but to lessen the amount of iteration on the back end. We brought on a live-action DP, Alice Brooks. She’s been directing the camera in a way that we hadn’t done on SPIDER-VERSE before.”
Hopefully, this means the movie is on track for its 2027 release date.
BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE will see Miles Morales on the run and in a bit of danger. The second movie left off with Miles using his electric powers to escape Uncle Aaron and the Prowler. It left viewers on a cliffhanger.
Co-director Kemp Powers said, “I think it’s a good cliffhanger. We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next.”
The first movie in the franchise, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Its totals combined with the sequel, SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, made $1.08 billion at the global box office, Deadline reported.
Part of Movieguide®’s review for INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE reads, “SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE is a terrific, enjoyable animated adventure with clever, funny writing… SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE has an uplifting Christian, moral worldview. Its redemptive pro-family themes extol love, sacrifice, forgiveness, doing the right thing, saving others, and getting a second chance.”
Movieguide® gave a similar review for ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE: “SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is a creative, exciting, funny animated superhero movie. It has several unexpected twists that add to the viewer’s enjoyment. Happily, ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE also has a strong pro-family theme…”
Hopefully those themes carry over into BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE.
