KISS KISS, BANG BANG

"Post-Modern Attack on Family Values"

What You Need To Know:

KISS KISS, BANG BANG is a self-referential mystery thriller about a thief named Harry, who gets involved with two Hollywood murder mysteries that seem to be related. One involves the apparent suicide or murder of his childhood sweetheart's sister, and the other involves the murder of a Hollywood producer's daughter. Harry suspects the two cases are related. Helping him solve the crimes is a homosexual detective named Perry.

KISS KISS, BANG BANG is a wild tale of family dysfunction, including incest. There's plenty of action that's both funny and exciting at the same time, but the movie's sarcastic attitude is laid on a bit thick. Ultimately, KISS KISS, BANG BANG is a post-modern attack on family values. For example, all of the father characters portrayed or mentioned in the story are evil. Thus, Harmony's father has sexually abused her sister, the Hollywood producer has his own daughter murdered, and Perry tells Harry that his own father beat him a lot. KISS KISS, BANG BANG also contains very strong sexual content (including a couple graphic, simulated homosexual acts at a decadent Hollywood party), much strong foul language, very strong action violence, and explicit nudity.

More Detail:

The title for KISS KISS, BANG BANG comes from one movie critic’s description of the average movie experience. It is a self-referential mystery thriller starring Robert Downey, Jr. as a thief who gets involved with some Hollywood producers and a homosexual private detective, played by Val Kilmer. The detective, known as “Gay” Perry, is assigned to teach the thief, Harry Lockhart, how to play a private detective in a movie. Harry narrates the story, often talking to the audience and, in the beginning, stopping the movie to explain something.

By coincidence, Harry meets a friend he knew in high school, a beautiful actress named Harmony whom Harry has always loved. Also by coincidence, Harry and Perry are present when two goons dump a car into a lake where Harry and Perry were on a stakeout. The car’s trunk carries the body of a murdered woman, who happens to be the daughter of the Hollywood producer who Perry was hired to follow.

A comical, but dangerous, series of incidents ensues, including the apparent suicide of Harmony’s troubled sister, who turns out to be the woman who hired Perry to follow the producer. The key to the mystery goes back to Harmony and Harry’s childhood in the Midwest.

Written and directed by Shane Black, the creator of the LETHAL WEAPON franchise, KISS KISS, BANG BANG is a wild and wooly tale of family dysfunction, including incest. There’s plenty of action that manages to be funny and exciting at the same time. The script’s sarcastic, playful attitude, however, is laid on a bit thick. In fact, the movie is divided into chapter titles named after mystery writer Raymond Chandler’s novels and short story collections. Too bad this homage to Chandler couldn’t be done in a better venue.

Ultimately, KISS KISS, BANG BANG is a post-modern attack on family values. For example, all of the father characters portrayed or mentioned in the story are evil. Thus, Harmony’s father has sexually abused her sister, the Hollywood producer has his own daughter murdered, and Perry tells Harry that his own father beat him a lot. Furthermore, Harry’s dream girl, Harmony, has a history of being extremely sexually promiscuous. At one point during the story, she is more than willing to do a sexual favor for Harry. Harmony is clearly a slut. Thus, the movie’s treatment of women is clearly not family friendly and may even be described as sexist by any feminist with integrity. The movie also attacks “homophobia” at one point, and Perry apologizes to Middle America about all the “f” words used in the movie.

KISS KISS, BANG BANG also contains very strong sexual content (including a couple graphic, simulated acts of male sodomy at a decadent Hollywood party), very strong action violence, and nudity, including a brief shot of a woman’s genital area. Apparently, Shane Black didn’t just want to stop at portraying a positive homosexual character, he also wants to rub the viewer’s face in explicit sexual references of one kind or another.

MOVIEGUIDE® finds this moral evil is often true of the pro-homosexual movement in Hollywood and the rest of the world. To us, this clearly shows that the homosexual movement in our society is not just about “equal rights.” It’s about destroying all sexual taboos, especially those taboos associated with Christianity and the Bible. Liberals, moderates, independents, and even self-described conservatives and Christians, who support easing some or all restrictions on homosexual behavior must face the fact that they are supporting something that has an anti-Christian, atheist, and pagan agenda that must no longer be tolerated. The homosexuals have come out of the closet in order to put Bible-believing Christians back into the closet.

Though the salvation and sanctification of everyone is vitally important, MOVIEGUIDE® does not care which adult in Hollywood, or San Francisco for that matter, is sleeping with whom behind closed doors. It’s not our job to expose such private matters. But, the future, and purity, of our children and grandchildren demands that we must start removing immediately all semblances of homosexuality from the public square. This, of course, will be a long and difficult struggle for the Church, but we’ve got to start somewhere.
