Destroying Young Minds

A recent news story has Dr. Ted Baehr, conservative media scholar and founder of Movieguide®:  The Family Guide to Movies and Entertainment, asking, “When will the video game industry be held responsible for encouraging violent behavior in children?”

In Slaughter, Louisiana on Aug. 21, an 8-year-old boy shot and killed his 90-year-old caregiver after playing a violent video game.

The video game the boy is thought to have been playing before the shooting was Grand Theft Auto IV, known to be the most controversial video game of all time due to its connection to real life crimes. For a game that rewards stealing, vandalism, murder, and rape, and advertises its virtual realism, it should be no surprise that it’s once again receiving heat.

“These sick, violent images are dangerous enough for susceptible teenagers, let alone 8-year-olds,” Dr. Baehr said.

Baehr urged Rock Star Games to contemplate the values they’re instilling in vulnerable minds and rethink producing violent, immoral games.
