In Memoriam:  Composer James Horner (1953-2015)

Movies would not be what they are without composers, and Hollywood just lost one of its greatest. James Horner died in a small plane crash June 22, 2015 just north of Santa Barbara, California. He was the pilot and was flying alone. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Horner’s last composition listed on IMDB is THE 33 a powerful, redemptive movie about the 33 Chilean miners who survived for 69 days a half of a mile underground.

Horner began to be noticed with his acclaimed score for what is considered the best STAR TREK movie, STAR TREK II:  THE WRATH OF KHAN.

Among Horner’s most acclaimed soundtrack scores are BRAVEHEART, THE ROCKETEER, AVATAR, TITANIC, APOLLO 13, THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN, FIELD OF DREAMS, GLORY, and FOR GREATER GLORY:  THE TRUE STORY OF THE CHRISTADA.

Some of his family movies include SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER, BOBBY JONES:  STROKE OF GENIUS, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, BALTO, AN AMERICAN TALE, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (2000), and HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS.

Nominated for an Oscar 10 times, Horner won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for TITANIC. He also won for Best Original Song for “My Heart Will Go On” sung by Celine Dion. The TITANIC soundtrack sold 27 million copies worldwide.

Horner is survived by his wife, Sarah, and two daughters.
