Social media can be a cruel platform when targeted by bullies.
Outspoken Christian and conservative actress Candace Cameron Bure (FAITH OF OUR FATHERS, FULLER HOUSE) faced this when she posted a photo on Instagram of herself wearing a T-shirt with the words “Not Today Satan” written on it. Whether she was aware of it or not, the saying was a catchphrase coined by a drag queen known as Bianca Del Rio, who responded to Candace’s picture with an Instagram post that reads, “If only, this homophobic, republican knew. . .”
The post from Bianca (whose real name and identity is Roy Haylock) must’ve caused a firestorm on Candace’s feed, because she responded in the comment section.
“Why do you have to be nasty to me?” she asked. “You don’t know me or my heart.”
She continued, “Loving Jesus doesn’t mean I hate gay people or anyone. You sent a bunch of hateful people to my page writing horrible things.”
Candace wrapped up her comment by saying, “I hope next time you’ll spread love and kindness, even when you disagree with people.”
In today’s internet culture, it’s so easy to respond to hate with hate, but Candace’s example reminds us of our Biblical calling to respond to anger with kindness and love.
