Friendship Is “The Great Love”: Behind the Scenes of CAPTAIN MARVEL

This Friday, the latest Marvel movie, CAPTAIN MARVEL makes its way to theaters. In CAPTAIN MARVEL, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson of ROOM) seeks to understand her past while fighting forces from other universes. Movieguide® had the opportunity to attend a press conference with the star-studded cast to hear more about the movie’s messages and behind the scenes tidbits.
Set in the ’90s, fans of the franchise get to see familiar faces like Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) back in their younger days. Jackson discussed playing Nick Furry years before his quintessential eye-patch, “[He is a] sort of a kinder, gentler, not so cynical world-weary, chip-on-the-shoulder Nick Fury, even more refreshing to have two eyes, so I don’t have to cover one eye while I was learning my lines.”
Producer Kevin Feige interjected, “well, the technology is spectacular,” he noted. “We’ve done it in a number of films, and I think this represents the peak. However, the two people up here who we, who we did do it to, Sam Jackson and Clark Gregg, are the two human beings on earth who don’t need it.”
As the movie progresses, Carol rediscovers her friendship with Maria Rambeau played by Lashana Lynch (BULLETPROOF). The Marvel newcomer commented on the complexity of their friendship, “they’re both in the military, so they come from male-dominated environments where they were drawn towards the women anyway. They would find power in whoever they, you know, find energetic connections to.” Lynch continued to speak of their dynamic, “I think they had a sarcasm together… She’s able to be every facet of what a woman represents today… She’s able to just be a kind, good person.”
Larson added to Lynch’s comments, “what they’ve [Maria and Carol] gone through together, going through military training together, being the only women and then using each other to lean on each other through that type of support and a recognition of their experience is really special.” Larson added that love in their friendship is the glue that holds the story together. “I think they would have been friends outside of that experience…, but I think that that’s a really tight-knit bond that they have and they’re family.” Larson continued, “this is the love of the movie; this is the great love. This is the love lost. This is the love found again. This is the reason to continue fighting and to go to the ends of the earth for the person, the thing that you love.”
Married writer/ director duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden commented on the heart behind all the sci-fi action and Marvel pizazz. “In the early conversations with Kevin and with Brie, that’s what we wanted to bring to this story… a continuation of the things we had done in our other movies, which is an intimacy… and character-focused storytelling.” The themes of love and friendship evolve in potency throughout the movie, something the filmmakers and cast hope resonates with audiences.
Additionally, CAPTAIN MARVEL brings a female superhero lead to Marvel. Larson explains her fascination of the character Carol Danvers, “getting to play a character where the whole character arc is watching her be this major risk taker, [which] means it’s not always going to work out the best.” In this, Larson found the crux of what Carol Danvers represents, “those are the moments, the defining moments of her character, where she doesn’t lay down, she gets back up. I mean, that’s everything. That’s for everybody. There isn’t a person who can’t relate to that.”
When asked about the biggest takeaway from production, Clark Gregg tellingly said, “I’ve had a long journey, 11 years, I think. Including 130 hours of television and a lot of trauma and heartbreaks, so for me to come back around to a very innocent, excited space, an origin moment … I found it really moving.”
Lashawna Lynch had a different answer to the same question. “Mine was my forever appreciation for single mothers, who don’t get enough light shined on them.” She continued, “to be able to have that opportunity to represent them and say a universal thank you for your work”
Jude Law has acted in Hollywood for decades and makes his first Marvel moment playing Yon-Rogg. Law answered the same question this way, “I think you always take away the experience of meeting new people. Every job you do. That’s one of the blessings of the jobs we have. You meet and work with a whole new group of people and I think that’s always a blessing.”
