By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

Since the dawn of filmmaking, the Bible has served as a major focal point for storytellers to bring these treasured and sacred stories to theaters and on TV. Through the years, many Hollywood names you probably know have also lent their creative talents to help accomplish just this…

**Please note: This isn’t a comprehensive list, but a rather a snapshot of a few stars who acted in Bible-inspired movies or programs that many are unaware of. To receive a comprehensive history of JESUS IN THE MOVIES, enter your email below.

  1. Sandra Bullock (pictured above)

Years before THE BLIND SIDE, actress Sandra Bullock voiced the character of Miriam (Moses’s sister) in the 1998 animated movie THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. Sandra was a rather new Hollywood talent at the time with only seven years of credits to her name. From there she went on to win an Oscar, was nominated for the Grace Award at the Movieguide® Awards and, started a family of her own.

  1. Mark Hamill

After this actor stopped swinging his lightsaber for the original STAR WARS movies, he voiced the character of Judah in JOSEPH: KING OF DREAMS. The animated movie follows Joseph’s story of being sold into slavery and using his God-given abilities to interpret the dreams of Pharaoh and eventually earn one of the most esteemed positions in the kingdom!

  1. John Wayne

In 1965, John Wayne had a small role in a movie far different than his usual westerns. In THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, John Wayne played one of the centurions at Jesus’s crucifixion. In Wayne’s later years, faith became very important to him. Charlton Heston (BEN-HUR), Pat Boone and Angela Lansbury also starred in the movie.

  1. Oscar Isaac

In 2006, THE NATIVITY STORY released and offered a fresh, yet biblical perspective of Jesus’s birth found in the New Testament gospels. Oscar Isaac played Joseph, Mary’s fiancé. In the movie, Oscar portrayed the doubt and fear that Joseph overcame to help his expectant bride bring Christ into the world. Since this role, the STAR WARS famous Oscar has starred in other movies with Christian themes, like THE PROMISE and AT ETERNITY’S GATE.

  1. Michelle Pfeiffer

Just like Sandra Bullock, the multi-talented Michelle Pfeiffer also lent her vocal talents to the character Tzipporah in THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. Michelle’s character Tzipporah is Moses’s wife who comes to love and support the young prince as he attempts to rescue the Israelites from the oppression of Pharaoh. Since Michelle is also a singer, she lent her voice to sing “When You Believe” from the movie’s soundtrack.

  1. Christian Bale

Before Christian Bale dawned the cape of Batman, the British actor played Jesus in the TV movie MARY, MOTHER OF JESUS in 1999. While the program is weak theologically and in quality, it does show the need for Jesus.

  1. Christopher Plummer

Seasoned actor Christopher Plummer dawned the role of Captain Von Trap in THE SOUND OF MUSIC in 1964 and continues to work in the entertainment industry even at the age of 89. In 2017, Christopher voiced the character of King Herod in the Movieguide® Award-winning movie about the birth of Jesus Christ titled: THE STAR.
