AMC Hopes to Open Theater Doors by Mid-June

The largest theater chain in America, AMC Entertainment, hopes to have all locations open by mid-June.

CEO of AMC Adam Aron said he doesn’t know an exact date when theaters will re-open. However, he believes Americans will be excited to get back to the theater and out of their homes.

While on CNBC’s SQUAWK ALLEY, Aron said, “The summer has always been one of the biggest movie seasons of the year, the summer and Christmas.”

The CEO’s goal of opening in mid-June goes along with the six-to-12-week closure timeline the theater chain announced when they closed their doors.

Because theaters are closed indefinitely right now, studios have pulled almost all of their titles that were going to be released in June and July.

According to CNBC, Sony pulled most of their 2020 titles and moved them to next year. Disney removed MULAN and BLACK WIDOW from their original release dates and hasn’t given them new dates yet.

Universal moved FAST AND FURIOUS’ F9 to 2021, while Warner Brothers decided to give WONDER WOMAN 1984 an August 2020 release date.

Titles mentioned above are the big blockbuster movies that were bound to hit the big screen in the coming months. The list doesn’t include a slew of mid-budget and independent movies that had to be pulled from the schedule.

In the wake of the closures, some studios have decided to send their movies straight to home entertainment. Paramount’s THE LOVEBIRDS will premiere on Netflix, while Universal’s TROLLS WORLD TOUR hits video on demand April 10.

To Aron, this time of quarantine will hopefully play right into the hands of the theaters when the time comes to open theater doors.

“I’ve been reading for years about a perception that there was going to be a switch towards home entertainment. I think if we learned anything in the last two weeks is people just so want to get out of their houses. I think we’re all feeling cooped up and want to get out and have life return to normal.”

When it does come time to open the doors, Aron said they are already strategizing ways to make the theaters cleaner. This might include temperature reading machines and obviously a stricter cleaning policy.

“I am very focused on getting AMC to the other side of this crisis,” he said.
