PLANET OF THE HUMANS

What You Need To Know:

PLANET OF THE HUMANS is a documentary from longtime environmentalist activist Jeff Gibbs, who writes, directs and narrates the movie. Gibbs shows that solar and wind energy are not viable forms of energy production. He shows that they don’t produce that much energy and usually have to be supported by power plants using oil, natural gas and coal. Gibbs shows that the world’s increasing reliance on biomass power plants that burn wood or produce ethanol is destroying far too many trees and wildlife areas. Finally, Gibbs attacks many leading environmentalist groups and leaders for being co-opted by capitalism and big corporations.

Gibbs makes some good points about solar and wind power. He’s convincing in attacking the world’s increasing reliance on biomass power plants that burn wood or produce ethanol. Furthermore, his attack on the hypocrisy of environmentalist groups and leaders is devastating. However, he doesn’t offer any specific solutions when he falsely claims that humans must reduce their overpopulation and their energy consumption. In PLANET OF THE HUMAN, Gibbs also makes capitalism and industrial technology the scapegoats for pollution and destruction of nature.

Content:

(HH, PCPCPC, EEE, AcapAcap, B, L, V, MM):

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements:
Strong humanist worldview, with very strong politically correct, pro-environmentalist elements, promotes humanist solutions to alleged problems and attacks capitalism and alleged capitalist infiltration of the environmentalist movement, but the documentary also recognizes the fact that solar and wind energy are not really “clean” energy and probably can never replace fossil fuels, though the movie’s humanist, environmentalist worldview repeatedly (though somewhat vaguely) advocates that reducing “overpopulation”, which is a fallacy, but especially reducing energy consumption is necessary to reduce the destruction of natural resources (including drinking water) and wildlife habitats and to control pollution

Foul Language:
Two “f” words,

Violence:
A few scenes show animals being endangered by deforestation, including an orangutan monkey who appears to be dying after getting trapped by some mud created by the deforestation in his habitat

Sex:
No sexual content

Nudity:
No nudity

Alcohol Use:
No alcohol use

Smoking and/or Drug Use and Abuse:
No smoking or drugs; and,

Miscellaneous Immorality:
Alleged and apparent hypocrisy in the environmentalist movement but the hypocrisy is rebuked and the documentary doesn’t examine the viability of nuclear power energy and ignores all the benefits of fossil fuels, which provide cheap energy and ignores the scientific evidence against the theory of apocalyptic climate change (movie assumes that the unproven environmentalist theory against carbon dioxide is true).

More Detail:

PLANET OF THE HUMANS is a documentary from longtime environmentalist activist Jeff Gibbs. It debunks the efficacy of solar and wind energy and criticizes biomass power plants for burning massive amounts of trees and taking too much wildlife areas to grow crops that create ethanol, but it promotes environmentalist hysteria about “overpopulation,” climate change and human consumption yet offers no specific solutions to these alleged problems.

The movie opens by asking how long do human beings have to live on Earth, and why are they so addicted to fossil fuels like oil, natural gas and coal. Gibbs, who writes, directs and narrates the movie, doesn’t answer these questions. He does suggest, however, that human consumption and overpopulation are the main reasons human beings need to use so much fossil fuel.

Gibbs then proceeds to show that solar and wind energy are not really viable forms of energy production. He shows that they don’t produce that much extra energy and usually have to be backed up by power plants that use oil, natural gas and coal. Gibbs also shows that the world’s increasing reliance on biomass power plants that burn wood or produce ethanol is destroying far too many trees and wildlife areas. Finally, Gibbs methodically attacks many leading environmentalist groups and leaders, including the Sierra Club, Al Gore and environmentalist guru Bill McKibben for being co-opted by capitalism and big companies like Goldman Sachs, Exxon, Chevron, Citi Bank, Georgia Pacific, and Archer Daniels Midland.

Gibbs makes some good points about solar and wind power. As the evidence seems to show, solar panels and windmills are not really “clean” green energy, and they won’t be replacing fossil fuels any time soon. Gibbs also shows that popular so-called “biomass” energy power plants also aren’t viable, because they require a massive destruction of millions of trees and many wildlife areas. They also may even result in MORE pollution, not less!

Despite this, Gibbs doesn’t really offer any specific solutions to the problems and issues he discusses. For example, he doesn’t say how to reduce energy consumption in any meaningful way or how to stop “overpopulation.” Most radical environmentalists seem to support abortion and onerous government programs that limit big families. Does Gibbs? He doesn’t say. Furthermore, most of Wester Civilization, such as Europe and North America, is suffering from a culture and future destroying birth dearth depopulation.

Also, Gibbs doesn’t discuss the pros and cons of nuclear power at all, and he assumes that the radical environmentalist movement’s warnings regarding apocalyptic climate change and its attacks on fossil fuels are true. In reality, there’s lots of scientific and economic evidence against apocalyptic climate change, and there’s lots of scientific, economic and even moral evidence supporting the use of fossil fuels. However, Gibbs never addresses the very real possibility, shown by even his documentary, that fossil fuels and nuclear power are actually the most environmentally friendly way to get the energy modern society wants and needs. Contrary to what Gibbs believes, modern electrical plants using fossil fuel technology are one of the best ways to lower poverty and improve the lives of people in the developing world.

Ultimately, the reason PLANET OF THE HUMANS fails is not only its very strong environmentalist message; but, it also fails because it has a humanist, unbiblical worldview that denies biblical theism and biblical ethics. Finally, it also fails because it adopts a strong anti-capitalist worldview.

In Genesis 1:28, God tells Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” In this verse, God contradicts the humanist, environmentalist worldview that Jeff Gibbs presents in PLANET OF THE HUMANS. Human beings are meant to rule over nature, not to let nature rule over them. By taking dominion over nature, humans beings can help humans, animals and even plants to grow and prosper. They can also cure human disease as well as disease that affects animals and plant life. Capitalism is not the problem. Human sinfulness is the real problem, and the only cures for that are Jesus Christ and the Bible.
