SAME TIME NEXT WEEK follows the lives of Sarah, a widow, and Ryan, a widower, who begin to find that they have many things in common other than their lost spouses, but are they ready to give love a second chance?
SAME TIME NEXT WEEK begins with Sarah, who’s checking off different things on a bucket list. One of those things is riding an electric scooter, and so Sarah goes to rent one. Walking past her on the street is Ryan, who’s at the end of a date. Ryan cuts the date short because he’s called into work at the hospital, where he’s a doctor in the ER.
While at the hospital, Ryan checks in on a patient who has injured her wrist, and it happens to be Sarah. He suggests that she gets an X-Ray and asks if there is anyone who can take her home. Cut to a building that’s being renovated. Here Maggie, Sarah’s sister-in-law, and her boyfriend, Tony, are renovating the bookstore Sarah and Maggie plan to open. Tony surprises her by proposing, but Maggie doesn’t want to tell Sarah for fear of making her sad about the loss of her husband Scott, Maggie’s brother.
Maggie picks up Sarah from the hospital, and they talk about the bookstore being Scott’s dream. Tony and Maggie still want to keep their engagement a secret. However, they wonder about Sarah’s secret, not knowing about the bucket list. Sarah goes to visit Scott’s tombstone and is surprised to find Ryan at the graveyard visiting his late wife, Harper. The two make the connection that they have both lost their spouse. Sarah says that she visits the cemetery every Sunday.
Ryan waits for Sarah to arrive the next Sunday. This time he invites her out to get pie and talk about the loss they’ve experienced because they can understand each other’s pain. She obliges, and they begin to get pie on Sundays at the same time each week.
As their friendship grows, they invite each other into their lives, and Sarah even shares the bucket list with Ryan. Ryan is ready to move onto a dating relationship. However, Sarah still struggles to accept his love and love him back due to her dishonesty about how she feels about losing Scott with those closest to her. Both Ryan and Sarah must face their pasts honestly. While Ryan is willing to sacrifice to do it together, Sarah is second-guessing her ability to be in a relationship.
Will Sarah be honest about her pain and willing to accept her second chance at love? Or, will she let the opportunity pass?
