Parents Celebrate as PBS Cancels CAILLOU

By Movieguide® Staff

Parents rejoiced after PBS Kids announced that the two-decade tenure of CAILLOU would finally come to an end.

Mothers and fathers complained that the precocious 4-year-old had a negative influence on their children and were thrilled at PBS’s decision to cancel the show.

While PBS’ announcement came with coping tips on telling young fans about the cancellation, social media expressed their joy.

“Caillou’s reign of terror is over!!” wrote a viewer on Twitter. Others echoed their displeasure of CAILLOU and called the character a bootleg Charlie Brown, a “little brat” and “evil.”

Another added: “You won’t be missed.”

The show first aired in 1997 on Teletoon, and new episodes were released until 2010. Despite no new episodes after 2010, reruns dominated PBS Kids for another 10 years, until recently.

“Growing up is not so tough, ‘cept when I’ve had enough,” sings Caillou in the show’s theme song. The show also depicts the 4-year-old throwing toys, beating his fists on the bathroom floor, and pinching his baby sister Rosie.

Parents admitted that they prohibited their children from watching the show due to its negative influence.

“This is the one show he wasn’t allowed to watch,” wrote one mother. Another PBS-reared adult reminisced, “This show was banned in my house and many of my friends!”

Some see the cancellation as a sign that 2021 is already more hopeful than 2020.

Media discernment is essential. Whether it takes 20 years or two episodes, it is paramount that parents encourage their children to watch wholesome content.
