Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood: ‘First and Foremost is Our Faith’

By Movieguide® Staff

Award-winning country artist Carrie Underwood and her husband, former professional hockey player Mike Fisher, revealed that faith in Christ anchors their relationship.

Married in 2010, Fisher and Carrie’s desire is to set an example for their children and their fans of how faith has affected their lives.

“I want my sons to see me and be like, this is real, this is like a transformed faith, that my dad is different,” Fisher said in a recent I Am Second video titled “Mike and Carrie: God & Country Ep 4 – If I Were Married to Myself.”

“I have unconditional love for my children but God has real unconditional love for his children,” Underwood said.

After Fisher retired from the NHL in 2018, he jumped into the business world at the outdoors company “CATCHIN’ DEERS.” Aside from encouraging people to get outside, Fisher said his ultimate goal is to point people to the truth.

“The reason, a big reason why I love the outdoors and part of our company’s mission is to point people to the Creator and encourage them in their faith,” Fisher said.

Although God uses Fisher and the company, Underwood jokingly wishes that Fisher wouldn’t hunt.

“I feel like this is another way that God has intervened, interjected into our lives,” Underwood added. “We have very different thoughts and feelings.”

“If he could be a vegan, vegetarian, my life would be… almost perfect,” Underwood joked. “That’s the thing about marriage too. Like, you don’t have to be on the same page about everything. If I were married to myself… You know what I mean? That would be terrible.”

However, one thing that the couple does not compromise on is their faith in God.

“First and foremost is our faith. We know God brought us together and trust his judgment,” Underwood said. “And then just finding, kind of, ways to compromise through it. One of the compromises when I wouldn’t have beef and I would shoot all of my meat with a few exceptions to that, but that’s kind of one of the things that we’ve worked on.”

“You know, we’ve been as the world sees it, blessed with a lot of things and doing what we love to do, and money, and fame. But there is no true happiness in the things that everyone sees that should be great with us apart from a real relationship with God and with Jesus,” Fisher added.

“We’re not perfect, we don’t have a perfect marriage, but we have that one thing in our faith and that’s why we’re here is to glorify God with what we’ve been given and hopefully we point people to the answer. That’s what we want to be.”

Movieguide® recently reported on Underwood’s newest album “My Savior”:

Although “My Savior” is Underwood’s first explicitly Christian album, the 7-time Grammy winner said that faith is always at the heart of what she does.

“I’m lucky enough that I feel like I’ve been making spiritual music along the way in my career,” Underwood told AP. “I love the sassy stuff and I love to get an attitude and get dressed up and do all that stuff. But it’s so nice to be able to sing songs like this.”

“It’s such a great time to just really slow down and be super intentional about what I’m doing,” Underwood said. “It’s not about the bigger, better thing. It’s about the smaller thing, the thing that’s inside of me.”

Underwood’s newest record includes classic hymns like “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Underwood also reimagined hymns to give them a fresh sound.

For “Nothing But the Blood of Jesus,” Bear Rinehart from NEEDTOBREATHE joins Underwood to bring a rock-inspired sound to the hymn. Gospel icon CeCe Winans also teamed with Underwood on “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”
