Disney Reevaluates Theatrical Windows to Give Families More Entertainment Choices

By Movieguide® Staff

With BLACK WIDOW’s premiere on the horizon, Disney is once again reevaluating how to distribute their content to consumers. Disney CEO Bob Chapek knows that traditional theatrical windows are no longer an option.

Over the past several months, there has been a tension between studios and movie theaters on the use of streaming services and theatrical release. Disney has been at the forefront of this conflict.

Chapek has previously said that they “certainly don’t want to do anything like cut the legs off a theatrical exhibition run.” His comments at the recent conference reflect this sentiment further.

Deadline reports that there are three forms of release that a studio can decide to use: the day-and-date tactic, the streaming-only option, and the 45-day exclusive theatrical window.

Disney has used all of these methods in the past year of pandemic, and Chapek concludes that this will continue post-pandemic.

Disney aims to vary their release methods, not wanting to undermine the “importance of theatrical to Disney,” nor “put all of [Disney] eggs in the theatrical exhibition basket.”

Chapek says that they are “trying to offer consumers more choice.”

In terms of financial splits with theaters, Chapek says that Disney will be taking its time in developing long-term plans with theaters, with consideration that the corporation is “consumer friendly.”

Chapek additionally responded to rebuttals to the different release forms, stating that with the 45-day exclusive window, viewers are not going to wait until the 46th day to watch a movie.

He said, “Forty-six days, six weeks, that’s a long time to wait. If you’re a BLACK WIDOW fan, you’re not going to wait that amount of time.”

In regards to the streaming only method of release, he detailed that every platform must have its own unique and sufficient content, to keep all consumers happy.

Families may appreciate this varied form of release, giving them options on whether to stay home or return to the theater.
