Oscar Winner Gary Sinise Says Skills Learned in the Military Carry Over to Civilian Jobs

By Movieguide® Staff

Although actor Gary Sinise is most often associated with his role as Lieutenant Dan in the Oscar-winning movie FORREST GUMP, he also is the founder of the Gary Sinise Foundation, which seeks to serve first-responders and military personnel.

In a recent conversation with Yahoo Finance, Sinise noted that men’s and women’s skills in the military carry over to the civilian world. Sinise is candid about his desire to honor and support veterans regarding their mental health, employment, and lives after serving the U.S.

“Military skills retooled and retrained into the civilian sector can be very, very beneficial to any company,” Sinise explained to the outlet. “And we’re trying to provide services at the Gary Sinise Foundation, or at least point people in the right direction.

“[Leaving the military] is always a difficult challenge, especially if you’ve been in the military for a long period of time,” Sinise continued. “So these are people from all over the country, various small towns, large cities across the nation. And they may be seeking employment. They may have mental wellness issues that they have to face, that they have to deal with.”

Sinise added that Bob Evans’s Heroes to CEOs program is a prime example of successful support for military veterans. The Gary Sinise Foundation and Bob Evans have teamed together for five years to help offer mental health services to ex-service members.

“We’re teaming up with some very good businesses and corporate leaders to try and do more for the men and women who serve our country,” Sinise said.

“Veterans in my own family—that’s where it starts,” Sinise added. “I got involved with supporting Vietnam veterans back in the ’80s, prior to playing a Vietnam veteran in ‘Forrest Gump’ when I got involved with supporting our wounded. And then September 11 came along.”

Actor Gary Sinise recently launched The Gary Sinise Foundation Avalon Network, which seeks to aid defenders, veterans, and first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress and TBI (traumatic brain injury).

“I’m proud of our team and how we were able to come together to serve our first responders and defenders during their time of need. While we can never do enough for our defenders and their loved ones, we can always do a little more, and the Gary Sinise Foundation Avalon Network is an initiative founded on that principle of service, to do ‘a little more’ for these deserving heroes and their families.”
