Converse Teams Replaces Chuck Taylor Star With Satanic Symbol

By Movieguide® Staff

Converse, the iconic brand behind the classic Chuck Taylor shoe, recently announced a collaboration with fashion designer Rick Owens and his company, Drkshdw.

The limited-edition shoes come in various styles but feature a pentagram in place of the star.

Converse and Owens confirmed the symbol’s occult meaning after Owens said he had “been using this pentagram for a long time because, obviously, it has adolescent occult associations.”

“But I like geometric diagrams like that because, in a very primal way, they are a culture’s grasp for control,” Owens, 59, told WWD. “And a way to organize thoughts and systems. And a pentagram, in this day and age, with all of its associations … I like the fact that it refers to an alternative system. And that suggests openness and empathy. It suggests the pursuit of pleasure, this pursuit of sensation. But one of the main things that I think it suggests is empathy and a consideration of systems of living that might not be standard. So that leads us to be more accepting and tolerant of other systems, which I think is a good thing.

“I always think of it as kind of corrupting something that exists,” he added. “And I don’t mean that in an aggressive way.”

While Owens preaches that his design and motive promote tolerance, the clear satanic symbolism is also intentional, according to the designer.

“[My] aesthetic gesture has always been about promoting the idea that perfect or traditional beauty can be very strict and cruel,” he said, adding that the symbol also “signifies tolerance for other ideas.”

This is not the first example of occult-themed footwear to be released this year. Rapper Lil Nas X announced his partnership with MSCHF, releasing 666 pairs of custom Nike Air Max 97s. The red and black shoes featured a drop of human blood in the sole, a pentagram symbol on the laces, and the reference Luke 10:18 on the sides.

Unlike the partnership between Converse and Own, Nike sued Lil Nas X and MSCHF for their use of the Nike swoosh and shoe without the company’s consent.

Nike filed a federal lawsuit after “Old Town Road” singer Lil Nas X released “Satan Shoes” in collaboration with the New York-based company MSCHF.

“We do not have a relationship with Little Nas X or MSCHF,” Nike revealed in an initial statement shared by NBC News. “Nike did not design or release these shoes and we do not endorse them.”

Nike sued MSCHF for copyright infringement. Nike claims they did not condone the modified Nike Air Max 97s that Lil Nas X released in tandem with his controversial music video for his new track “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”

Culture’s fascination with spiritual darkness indicates the need for media wisdom and discernment rooted in the truth of God’s word. As Christians, we know that God is in ultimate control and that Satan is destined to defeat.

Romans 16:20: “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

1 John 4:4: “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

However, the Bible also recognizes that Satan still works in the world today and encourages believers to take up the armor of God.

Ephesians 6:11: “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

Though Owens says that this is tolerance and love, Satan is the opposite of those things. Satan is the destroyer and wants control. Jesus is the only key to love.
