Dolly Parton’s Movieguide® Award-Nominated Movie Wins Emmy

By Movieguide® Staff

Due to COVID-19 keeping audiences indoors for most of the year, the battle for this years’ Best Tv Movie category was hard-fought.

However, the Movieguide®-nominated movie starring Dolly Parton, CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE, took home the Emmy on Sept. 12. Parton won Movieguide®’s Grace Prize® for her role in the movie.

Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads

DOLLY PARTON’S CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE is an entertaining musical on Netflix. Dolly Parton plays an angel who tries to get a hard-hearted real estate woman to change. The woman, named Regina, is trying to evict everyone in a small town so she sell it to a developer who wants to build America’s largest mall. The pastor organizes the townspeople to fight Regina. Surprises occur, and everyone ends up at the church on Christmas Eve.

DOLLY PARTON’S CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE is a delightful Christmas movie. The movie’s last half is very emotional and will bring tears and joy to many viewers. Much of the music is fun. Some of it, however, gets in the way of the dialogue, but the dancing is good. The good news is that God intervenes, the Bible is prominent, Christian allusions abound, and the church is the center of the story, although the angels become the instrument of change, as they do in IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children because of some light foul language, alcohol use and sexual dancers in a musical number.

The family-friendly Christmas movie from Netflix also beat competition from Amazon, which was favorited to take home first place with SYLVIE’S LOVE.

“I love working with Netflix, because all the people, they’re just absolutely wonderful,” Parton told Movieguide®. “They give you creative control, they guide you and help you. They give you as much input as you need. But they give you enough rope to hang yourself, so to speak. They allow the creative people to be creative. And I’ve always longed for that in this business. So we love them and working with Warner Brothers, as well. You know, they’ve always been very supportive. So I just had the most wonderful group of people supporting me. So how could we not win something? I’m so glad that it’s the Movieguide® Award.”

While on the set of CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE, a young actress recalled how Dolly Parton saved her life.

Country music icon and actress Dolly Parton, who stars as an angel in her new movie CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE, rescued a child actor from getting hurt on the set.

The 9-year-old opened up recently about how Parton saved her from getting run over from a vehicle.

“We were on set and I was at the hot chocolate station and they said go back to your beginning positions,” Talia Hill explained. “So, there is a vehicle moving and I was walking and then somebody grabbed me and pulled me back and I looked up and it was Dolly Parton and I was like… surprised.”

Hill and her two siblings, 16-year-old Tristan and 13-year-old Tyson, appear in the movie as dancers in a musical number.

Talia continued: “She was like ‘Well, I am an angel you know,’ because she plays an angel in the movie. And I was in shock. She hugged me and shook me and said ‘I saved your life’ and my mom was crying like, ‘yes you did Dolly Parton, yes you did!'”

Talia and her siblings were all thrilled to work with Parton.

“When you think of Dolly Parton, you are just like’ it is Dolly Parton,’ but when you actually see her you are like ‘Wow, it’s Dolly Parton,” being in her presence lifts you. She is so amazing,” said Tristan.

“When Dolly walked in, she smelled like heaven. She greeted everyone even if you were a trash can person,” Talia added. “It was such a great feeling.”
