5 Uplifting Movies Nominated for the 2022 Academy Awards

By Movieguide® Staff

Though the Oscars are often woke, honoring artsy movies that few regular moviegoers like or have even seen, this year’s list included several nominations that contained strong moral, biblical worldviews.

These uplifting movies are so inspiring that they’ve wormed their way into the hearts of voting members as strong contenders for the best movies of the year, along with several other superlatives.

BELFAST

BELFAST is brilliant, life-affirming, dramatic, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking. Beautifully written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, the movie has a strong Christian, morally uplifting worldview. It extols family, doing the right thing, faith, compassion, Godly love, gratitude, peace, courage, and joy. However, the movie contains strong foul language, violence and a universalist comment that undermines the New Testament biblical warning against being unequally yoked. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers. That said, BELFAST is wonderful movie for mature viewers.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Original Song

KING RICHARD

KING RICHARD is beautiful, heartfelt and inspiring. It has a strong Christian, moral, pro-family worldview with positive messages of Christian faith, virtue and character. Viewers will become totally immersed in the story and find the characters appealing. The movie does have some hard scenes related to gang violence and foul language. Overall, though, KING RICHARD stresses the importance of Christ-like character, the love of a family, and following one’s natural God-given talents. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Film Editing

DUNE

DUNE is a powerful, exciting, satisfying epic. It’s worth seeing on a big screen. Even better, the movie has strong Christological themes, excellent dialogue and conservative statements about freedom and individualism. It affirms a father’s love and the importance of motherhood. DUNE has very little foul language, and no explicit crude content. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers because of intense action violence and references to the hallucinogenic properties of the natural resource called spice.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects

LUCA

Though not as masterful as Pixar’s best movies, LUCA is a breezy, funny, heartwarming animated adventure. Ercole, the town bully, is a totally conceited, selfish boy who thinks he’s God’s gift to the world. Meanwhile, Alberto and Luca are in danger of being killed by the townspeople if their true identities as sea monsters are discovered. Ultimately, Alberto and Luca’s friendship, and the friendship they develop with the girl and her father, overcomes the town’s prejudice and Ercole’s selfish pride. LUCA, which is streaming on Disney Plus, also has some positive pro-family themes.

Nominated for Best Animated Feature

NO TIME TO DIE

NO TIME TO DIE packs an emotional punch because of the personal stakes Bond faces. NO TIME TO DIE is packed with exciting action, though some action at the end could be trimmed. The story’s personal nature not only raises the stakes. It also strengthens the story’s moral, redemptive elements. That said, though the amount of foul language is limited, there are two “f” words and two strong profanities. Also, NO TIME TO DIE has intense action violence. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong or extreme caution, depending on age level.

Nominated for Best Sound, Best Original Song, Best Visual Effects
