LinkedIn Rolls Out New Features to Eliminate Political Posts, Attract Gen Z

Networking site LinkedIn is receiving praise for its clean design, job-finding capabilities and elimination of politics — a rare feature for a social media site these days.

Especially surprising is the platform’s appeal to Generation Z, which has driven TikTok to the No. 1 social platform, beating out competitors Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

“We’re seeing a lot of Gen Z join the network right now,”  LinkedIn Chief Executive Ryan Roslansky told the Wall Street Journal. He added that job moves are up nearly 70% for users ages 16 to 22, vs. just 7% for users over 55. “We’re seeing the platform evolve much more to cater to them.”

As more people join the site, the platform continues to test new features, including one that allows users to hide political posts.

“If they find it effective, if it’s helping them better accomplish what they’re trying to accomplish on LinkedIn, then we’ll roll it out to more,” Rolansky said.

The innovation is also allowing users to create more professional profiles.

“Is everyone on LinkedIn Mother Teresa?,” Wall Street Journal journalist Joanna Stern wrote. “Certainly not, but because people show up to advance their careers or to seek ‘economic opportunity,’ as Mr. Roslansky said, most put their best foot forward. For me, it has meant less misinformation and trolling, and more thoughtful posts and interactions.”

As Facebook and Instagram crack down on “misinformation,” and slap warning labels on many posts that disagree with the mainstream narrative, LinkedIn’s “no politics” feature offers a welcome sigh of relief for users who want a straight-forward experience.

“Threats to that overwhelmingly pleasant, algorithmically powered feed that defines LinkedIn is why the company is experimenting with more controls. After hearing from users that political content was mucking up the experience, it added a few options to limit it—something I’d love other social-media networks to rip off!” Stern said.

However, as the other major networks grapple with the health tolls their algorithms have taken on their users, a cleaner platform focused on personal development rather than gossip could be the one that comes out ahead. Only time will tell.
