The Return of Mrs. Claus: Elizabeth Mitchell Joins Tim Allen in SANTA CLAUSE Reboot

By Movieguide® Contributor

The “original” Mrs. Claus will be joining Santa back at the North Pole after all. According to Deadline, Elizabeth Mitchell will reprise her role alongside Tim Allen in the upcoming THE SANTA CLAUSE Disney+ limited series.

Mitchell first joined the movie franchise in THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 in 2002, when Scott Calvin/Santa Claus was compelled to marry in order to fulfill the entirety of the legal obligation he took on when he became Santa. She also featured in THE SANTA CLAUSE 3: THE ESCAPE CLAUSE with Martin Short starring as Jack Frost.

THE SANTA CLAUSE franchise offers fun viewing for families while providing an opportunity for discussion about the whimsy of popular Christmas traditions and the true origin of the Christmas celebration – the birth of Jesus Christ. As Movieguide®’s founder and publisher Dr. Ted Baehr said of the first movie:

THE SANTA CLAUSE is fun, lightweight fare which does not teach magical thinking or New Age beliefs. However, Christians do not want their children confusing the Truth of Jesus Christ with the myth of Santa Claus, nor do we want Christmas held hostage by pagan mythology. Therefore, although this movie is innocuous, it is important to explain to our children the difference between fantasy, which can teach some good moral lessons, and the Truth, which sets them free from the bondage to the corruption of our age — including the inherited corruption of sin, the penultimate disease afflicting mankind. Helping our children understand the Truth, will give the discernment they need to see and enjoy THE SANTA CLAUSE without conforming to the mindset of the fallen world.

Following the initial announcement about Tim Allen’s return to the role earlier this year, Movieguide® reported:

In addition to returning as Scott Calvin, his role from the previous movies, Allen will also be executive producing the project.

“Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever,” according to a release. “He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.  With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.”

Allen’s performance in the first movie earned him a People’s Choice Award, and spawned two sequels, all of which were lauded by Movieguide® for their family-oriented message, production value, and great comedy.
