More Detail:
IN THE GREY is an action-thriller where a team of elite operatives, played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Bronco), Henry Cavill (Sid), and led by Eiza Gonzales (Rachel), are sent on an impossible heist, a suicide mission, to steal back a billion dollars using automatic weapons and high explosives. The movie has merit for its superbly executed action but fails overall as a story.
Rachel is paid to recover stolen money, a billion dollars, from a criminal controlling an island off the coast of Spain. Rachel then assembles a mercenary team for a well-planned heist and an extraction that includes chases, fighting, explosions, traps, a vehicle-motorcycle chase, landmines, and more.
The first hour of IN THE GREY is filled with excessive exposition for the planning of the mission, which then leaves little to treasure when the actual heist and escape action occurs in the final act. The story is void of high stakes, and the lead characters lack depth. This causes viewers to disengage from the story and ask, “Why should we care?” Also, the plot is rather convoluted. That said, the movie’s locales are magnificent and include Spain, Saudi Arabia and the Canary Islands. Technically, IN THE GREY shines with its Mission Impossible type strategy of detailed execution that leads to the already expected action.
IN THE GREY has a strong pagan worldview and contains lots of deception, with the bad guy stealing from the good guys, and the good guys stealing from the bad guy, cold killing, sexual verbiage, the intentional “in the camera” sensual display of cleavage from the main character, women in skimpy bikinis, some alcohol, violence, mindless action, and excessive foul language.
IN THE GREY is rated R for violence, sensuality, and language, and demands caution for older children and teens. It glorifies living “in the grey” area, between moral and immoral, legal and criminal.
