GOING HOME Star Cynthia Geary Opens Up About New, Prayer-Filled Series

By Movieguide® Staff

The Emmy Award-nominated actress Cynthia Geary recently starred as a hospice nurse in the new faith-filled Pure Flix series, GOING HOME.

The series, created by Dan Merchant, focuses on the life of hospice nurse Charley Copeland and the unique opportunity she has to help families and their loved ones pass on.

“This is a powerful and moving show about family, faith and relationships,” Merchant said of the show. “It’s ultimately about compassion, empathy and forgiveness. Our hope is that people think deeper about their relationships and realize that every interaction can be a blessing.”

Geary plays the lead character, Charley, and said that it was “beautiful” to learn about hospice nurses through the role.

“I thought the way that Dan approached the show was so beautiful,” Geary told Movieguide® in a recent interview. “I really had no experience with hospice. Both my parents are in their 90s and they’re still alive. I got to go to the Spokane hospice that Dan based the show on and meet the nurses and talk to them and I heard so many incredible stories about how grateful the families were.”

Geary added that the nurses at the hospice center had a “calling” and performed their jobs with a mission in mind.

“I really think the nurses there have a calling and it’s to help families and the people that are passing on to have a peaceful transition and to make it a positive experience and beautiful,” Geary said.

“Nurses are everyday heroes and quiet professionals. I really wanted to highlight all the joy, patience and love they bring into every hospital or hospice room they enter,” Merchant said. “Nurses like Charley make someone’s last days as comfortable and peaceful as possible and that’s something that deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated.”

Despite the somber topic of death, Geary commended Merchant for the series’ hope-filled message.

“This show gives people so much hope,” she explained. “I love the way every show ends with Charley talking to God on her back porch. I mean, that is my favorite part of every show. I feel a little weird saying that because it’s just me doing a monologue. But the relationship she has with God is so great… I just loved the way that Dan approaches that. I haven’t seen it in other shows, so I think it was really special.”

“I liked the idea that it was a conversation and she’s talking to her best friend and feels that comfortable. I just thought that was really beautiful,” she added.

Geary, who lives in the state of Washington where the series takes place, said that one of her daily practices is gratitude.

“I keep a gratitude journal,” she explained. “There are some days where I wake up rushed, but I try to write in my journal all the things I’m grateful for and the list is huge. I can look back on things that are challenging, times with my kids, and be grateful for them and that’s a big thing with me.”

“I also just try to take a little time to be quiet and be and just appreciate where I am, what I’m doing, where I live,” she continued. “I live in a beautiful, gorgeous place.”

Geary said that her parents instilled habits like gratitude journals through their family devotions.

“I’m the youngest of four kids,” she said. “We’d have breakfast together and my parents would read devotionals at our breakfast and that’s how they started every single day with our family. Then we had dinners together every night. Being a parent now, I know how hard it is to get your kids to sit down at the table and everyone’s so busy [but] I think that’s really important.”

The show will premiere exclusively on Pure Flix on June 2.
