PAWS OF FURY: LEGEND OF HANK Emphasizes Working Together

By Movieguide® Contributor

The PAWS OF FURY: LEGEND OF HANK cast recently spoke on how this children’s comedy movie tackles challenging themes, including the importance of understanding one another and working together.

“It’s preposterous good fun, and a very entertaining way to teach an important lesson. As you get to know and recognize the difference [between cats and dogs], that difference brings strength, that by working together, cats and dogs together, they’re even more successful than they would have been fighting each other,” George Takei, who plays Ogha, expressed.

Movieguide® gave PAWS OF FURY: LEGEND OF HANK a +1 rating, meaning it’s acceptable for older children with caution for younger children.

The review reads, “PAWS OF FURY: THE LEGEND OF HANK has a moral worldview about thinking of others above oneself. The movie stresses that pride goes before a fall, so don’t do things for your own glory. Being committed to helping others and being there for others is another central theme, along with greed is seen as bad. There is also a message of not judging others if they’re different than you. PAWS OF FURY has lots of cartoon action violence, so MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.”

With engaging characters, comedy and important lessons, the whole family will enjoy this movie. In it, a dog named Hank aspires to become a samurai, but it’s hard to achieve his dream in a world of cats. However, with the help of an old samurai cat, Hank’s skills and ego grow. Meanwhile, the villain Ika Chu plans to take over the village. Hank must overcome his pride to help others.

“It’s about friendship. It’s about love. It’s about about the town caring about somebody who’s so difficult, such a stranger. And it works,” Mel Brooks, who plays The Shogun, shared.

“There’s always a way that you can embrace the qualities and values of another group of individuals and become part of the whole network,” Samuel L. Jackson, playing Jimbo, said. “It’s figuring out that there are no differences, that all we got to do is figure out a way to live. If everybody treats everybody the way they want to be treated, we pretty much got it going.”

Takei added, “The thing about movies and storytelling is it has woven into it some lessons to help you make it through this thing called life. It’s to give you that lesson in an engaging entertaining way, in a hilarious way, and to see the human frailties, the inability to trust each other as ridiculous.”

Aasif Mandvi and Gabriel Iglesias, who play Ichiro and Chuck, explain that the cats “never really met a dog, and that’s what I think is so great about this movie is that they get to know this dog. And then they realize that dogs are just like cats except they bark.”

“They’re a mirror of what our world is, and how we can become better people by understanding what the story is about and how we reject or accept people in a certain way,” Jackson continued.

Michael Cera, who plays Hank, expressed his excitement for children to see this movie, saying, “it’s going be so much fun, not only because of what a shared experience it will be and how funny it is and how sweet it will be to see this movie with this beautiful message in a room full of people, but it’s also just so immersive—the world—and so expansive and just takes you to another place which is what you want when you go see a movie in the theaters—just be transported somewhere.”

PAWS OF FURY: LEGEND OF HANK is playing in theaters.
