Tom Holland Explains His Absence From Social Media: ‘It’s Very Detrimental To My Mental State’

By Movieguide® Contributor

SPIDER-MAN star Tom Holland recently took a break from social media to focus on his mental health.

The actor took to Instagram to post a video explaining his absence from social media platforms, saying that they are “detrimental” to his mental health and that he “spirals” after reading unkind comments about himself online.

“I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming,”Holland explained. “I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately it’s very detrimental to my mental state. So, I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”

He also took a moment to mention the UK-based teen mental health charity Stem4, which he supports through his charity, The Brothers Trust.

Holland ended the video by telling fans he would be disappearing from social media again and thanked them for their “love and support.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Holland’s desire to start a family:

After the highly anticipated SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, Tom Holland said he is looking forward to what’s next, whether that is more Spidey or ‘starting a family.’

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Holland shared his appreciation for his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

“I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve been so grateful to Marvel and Sony for giving us the opportunity and keeping us on and allowing our characters to progress. It’s been amazing,” Holland, 25, said. “And that’s why for me, I don’t want to say goodbye to Spider-Man — but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to Spider-Man.”

MCU fans got their first look at Holland’s Peter Parker in 2016’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and later starred in his first standalone Spider-Man movie, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, in 2017.

Despite his run as one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, Holland said he doesn’t want to hold onto the role forever.

“I don’t want to be responsible for holding back the next young person that comes in who deserves it just as much so,” Holland said.

However, Sony recently said that Holland would appear as Spider-Man again.

Whatever the case may be for Holland’s future in the MCU, the actor said he wants to start a family. Currently, Holland is dating SPIDER-MAN co-star Zendaya.

“I’ve spent the last six years being so focused on my career,” Holland said. “I want to take a break and focus on starting a family and figuring out what I want to do outside of this world.”

Holland, who is excited to become a father, added that he would want to be a teacher if he weren’t acting.

“I love kids. I can’t wait to be a dad — I can wait and I will, but I can’t wait!” he continued. “If I’m at a wedding or a party, I’m always at the kids’ table hanging out. My dad’s been such a great role model for me. I think I’ve got that from him. So I think I’d be a primary school teacher or something like that.”
