TOP GUN: MAVERICK Wins National Cinema Day Box Office

TOP GUN: MAVERICK reached new heights this weekend at the box office, with a little help from National Cinema Day’s $3 tickets.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, more than 8 million people showed up to take part in the promotional event. In comparison, just 1 million people went to the movies the previous day.

Movieguide® previously reported on National Cinema Day’s mission:

National Cinema Day, which will take place September 3, is being put on by the Cinema Foundation, a non-profit part of the National Association of Theater Owners.

Over 3,000 theaters all over the US will offer $3 movie tickets, including major chains like AMC and Regal Cinemas.

This new initiative is in an effort to combat low Labor Day weekend sales. That weekend is traditionally a slow week for theaters, but the whole summer has been slow, due to a lack of movies from studios.

In addition to the cheaper tickets, theaters will also show a “sizzle reel” of upcoming movies, like BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER, MY POLICEMAN, and LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE.

“After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” said Jackie Brenneman, Cinema Foundation’s president, in a statement. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”

TOP GUN: MAVERICK was the biggest winner at the box office, pulling in $7.9 million over the four day weekend period. Many were surprised to see the action movie beat out the rerelease of last year’s box office winner, SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME.

The superhero flick was rereleased for National Cinema Day, giving fans deleted scenes and bonus footage. NO WAY HOME came in at No. 3 at the box office this weekend, making $6.6 million.

Movieguide® previously reported on TOP GUN: MAVERICK’s box office success:

Tom Cruise’s TOP GUN: MAVERICK continues to rise above the competition.

The Paramount and Skydance production starring Tom Cruise recently surpassed the $1 billion mark this past weekend.

The TOP GUN sequel is only the second movie released post the COVID-19-related shutdowns to surpass $1 billion. SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME made $1.9 billion. However, TOP GUN: MAVERICK earned the impressive milestone without the aid of significant markets in China and Russia, which did not play the patriotic blockbuster.

Cruise celebrated the achievement via his Twitter: “To all the films in release, to all the studios, and to all the exhibitors: congratulations. To the audience: thank you for venturing out and allowing us to entertain you. See you at the movies.”
