Instagram Suspends Pornhub’s Account as Lawsuits Continue to Pile Up

By Movieguide® Staff

Instagram, owned by its parent company Meta, recently suspended Pornhub’s account from the social media platform.

ExodusCry, a Christian nonprofit that supports the worldwide #Traffickinghub campaign against Pornhub and other adult sites, celebrated the news via their Instagram account:

“Pornhub’s current plight is a case study of what happens when your business profits from videos of rape, child abuse, and sex trafficking. Through the #Traffickinghub campaign, we’ve been calling out Pornhub/MindGeek since February of 2020—with the help of YOUR voices—and month after month the wins just keep coming!” the post reads.

While Instagram’s latest suspension is a victory on the road to protecting children on the internet from sexual exploitation, other major social media platforms remain a danger to children.

Twitter is a leader among social media platforms concerning its inclusion of pornographic content.

“Twitter is one of the only social media platforms that openly welcomes pornographic content. If it wants to host porn, it is by virtue, a porn site and has a responsibility to promptly remove illegal videos uploaded to the platform, as well as verify the ages of people in the videos,” a separate post from ExodusCry reads. “And this isn’t even mentioning the fact that Twitter also allows 13 year olds to create accounts, while allowing people to upload porn.”

The NCOSE listed Twitter on their “Dirty Dozen” list for 2022:

Pedophiles and other predators go to Twitter to trade in criminal content such as child sexual abuse and nonconsensual pornography. The platform is rampant with accounts and posts functioning as advertisements for commercial sex—including prostitution.

Twitter fails to adequately respond to its victims, claiming it cannot be held accountable for disseminating illegal material. Twitter has even flatly refused to remove verified child sex abuse material from its site when asked by victims. Twitter must prioritize implementing robust and proactive efforts to remove sexual exploitation and abuse from its platform.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Twitter faces a federal lawsuit, filed on behalf of a teenager, which claims that the social media giant waited to remove sexually graphic videos involving minors posted to the platform by sex traffickers.

The lawsuit—filed on Jan. 20, 2021, in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California—withheld the minor’s name but identified him as a 16-year-old Florida resident.

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), the Haba Law Firm, and the Matiasic Firm will represent the teenager, who the legal document labels as John Doe.

According to the plaintiff and his parents, Twitter refused to remove the video, which depicted the boy’s sexual abuse at age 13, from their platform of more than 300 million users upon their initial complaint.

“This lawsuit seeks to shine a light on how Twitter has enabled and profited from [child pornography] on its platform, choosing profits over people, money over the safety of children, and wealth at the expense of human freedom and human dignity,” the lawsuit reads.
