Chargers’ Dustin Hopkins Kicks Game-Winning FG Despite Leg Injury, Praises God: ‘I’ve Got So Much To Be Thankful for Apart from Football’

The Los Angeles Chargers won their third game in a row after Dustin Hopkins kicked a game-winning field goal to defeat the Denver Broncos 19-16 in overtime.
Hopkins made all four field goal attempts despite playing through a right-leg injury.
Reporters after the game questioned what kept Hopkins on the field, despite his grimace of pain after each kick, and he took the opportunity to give glory to God.
“I just want to say thank you to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” he told ESPN’s Lisa Salters after the game. “I’ve got so much to be thankful for apart from football, and so when something like this happens, I’m blessed either way. But to be on the good side of that obviously feels a lot better. But yeah, I was hurting pretty good.”
Later in the interview Hopkins added: “Make or miss, it’s for my good, whether that’s character or for the team or any of that. So, I just don’t put too much stock in the situation and try to remember who I am and Whose I am.”
After the heroic victory, Hopkins took to Instagram and again pointed people to Jesus.
“As a follower of Jesus, in both highs and lows, God is faithful regardless of circumstance because he has already reconciled us to himself through Christ Jesus,” he wrote. “Thankful for this team, but especially for those blocking, snapping ( @jharris_47 ), and holding (JK Scott). I’ll remember this one for as long as I live! Hope to be back on the field soon!”
In a recent segment on the Sports Spectrum podcast, Hopkins shared his testimony.
“I think a lot of times, I try to do it on my own strength, like, ‘I’ve got to be better about reading’ or ‘I’ve got to be better about praying without ceasing throughout my day.’… Seeking Him in those moments and seeking His presence, I think those other things come along with Him,” he shared.
