Former Saints QB Drew Brees: ‘Love the Lord…Love Your Neighbor’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees’ journey from the San Diego Chargers to his iconic tenure with the New Orleans Saints is a story of faith, triumph, records and the embodiment of a true sportsman.

Brees began his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers. However, his breakout season came in 2004 when he led the Chargers to a 12-4 record and earned a Pro Bowl selection.

In 2006, Brees signed with the New Orleans Saints as a free agent after a shoulder injury raised concerns about his future in San Diego. This move was transformative for both Brees and the Saints. Under his leadership, the team achieved remarkable success, highlighted by their victory in Super Bowl XLIV (2010 season). Brees was named the Super Bowl MVP for his performance in that game.

Throughout his career with the Saints, Brees became known for his precision passing and exceptional ability to read defenses. He set numerous NFL records, including most career passing yards, most career completions and highest completion percentage in a single season.

Brees was not only known for his in-game achievements but also for his leadership on and off the field. A respected figure in the Saints’ locker room, he also participated in charitable and community work in New Orleans.

However, Brees’ success doesn’t only come from his abilities. Instead, it comes from his faith.

In a video Brees posted on his X (formerly Twitter) page, the former quarterback said, “I live by two very simple Christian fundamentals, and that is love the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself,” Brees said in the video.

“The first one is very self-explanatory. The second one, love your neighbor as yourself, what does that mean to me? It means love all, respect all and accept all. So that is actually how I live my life. That is what I try to do with my family, with my teammates, with people in my community, with my friends, all people. No matter your race, your color, your religious preference, your sexual orientation, your political beliefs, it doesn’t matter.”

Jon Ackerman with Sports Spectrum reported Brees’s favorite Bible verse, 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we live by faith, not by sight.”

Brees retired in 2021 and now participates in local functions such as pickleball. He also gives back to the football community and spends time with family and friends.

Movieguide® previously reported on Brees’ retirement:

NFL Quarterback and Christian Drew Brees wants to continue his career in football off the field.

The New Orleans Saints QB recently announced his retirement from the league and noted that he would immediately join NBC Sports as a football analyst.

“I’m part of the team now. A new team,” Brees said. “I’m excited about that journey, I’m excited to stay very closely connected with the game of football. It’s been such an important part of my life and I continue to be able to talk about it and show passion for it and bring my kids along for the ride there as well, and let them be part of some of those special moments.”

Over the course of Brees’ 15 years with the New Orleans Saints, he has won several awards, including Super Bowl MVP, after he brought his team to a championship win in 2010.
