‘Positive Outcome’: Sophia Loren In Recovery From Hip Surgery After Fall

By Movieguide® Contributor

Sophia Loren is on the mend after undergoing hip surgery following a fall at home.

“A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms. Loren hip fractures,” reads an English translation of an Instagram post from Loren’s restaurant chain. “Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation.”

The post continued, “Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery.”

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the 89-year-old fell in her bathroom, sustaining “several fractures to her hip as well as a serious fracture to her femur, which needed surgery.”

They also reported that her sons, Carlo and Edoardo, are by her side during this hospitalization.

Edoardo directed Loren in her most recent project, 2020’s THE LIFE AHEAD, which won the actress a David di Donatello Award for Best Actress.

A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:

THE LIFE AHEAD is sensitively directed by Sophia Loren’s son, Edoardo Ponti. It is well acted by Sophia and the boy who lays Momo. The movie makes a plea for love, tolerance and forgiveness. However, it’s marred by some politically correct leftist elements, plenty of foul language and references to Islam, prostitution, cross dressing, and drugs. Incidentally, Momo eventually decides to stop selling drugs, but his decision comes late in the story. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises that the Italian movie THE LIFE AHEAD is regrettably excessive.

In a 2020 interview with AARP, Loren spoke about aging, saying, “Sometimes when I say I’m 86, I don’t believe it. I feel 20!”

“Why change your body and be somebody else if you are happy inside?” she said of her desire to age naturally. “I never thought of that—never. I like what I have. I like me!”

The actress also shared that she prefers to stay busy and think positively.

“If you are healthy and doing something you enjoy, then you cannot think, ‘God, tomorrow I’m going to die!’ No! You can do many wonderful things,” Loren said. “I work, read, watch movies, go to church. And I breathe a lot.”
