Why SOUND OF FREEDOM Director Says It’s ‘A Safe Movie To Watch’

By Movieguide® Contributor

SOUND OF FREEDOM director Alejandro Monteverde shared why he wanted to keep the movie “safe” for viewers.

“The film is extremely safe,” he explained. “I mean, my 10-year-old, 12-year-old, and 15-year-old have seen the film. And it’s definitely not a movie that will scar. You know, that’s one of the things people may think, ‘Oh, I’m going to see it, it’s going to scar me, it’s going to—there’s going to be an image that I’m not going to be able to forget.’”

Monteverde shared that the filmmakers were “very careful” to show the movie’s dark themes but were also “very careful [about] how far we went.”

“It is very safe,” he emphasized. “It’s a safe movie to watch. And even though it’s a contradiction…it’s a film that you can really enjoy because of the hope that it will bring.”

A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:

SOUND OF FREEDOM is gripping and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. The movie sheds light on the need for strong people to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of sex trafficking. SOUND OF FREEDOM has a strong Christian, moral worldview that promotes sacrifice and the message that “God’s children are not for sale.” MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter, implied and depicted violence, and abuse of children.

SOUND OF FREEDOM has been a massive hit at the box office, with Newsweek reporting that it’s now one of the highest-earning independent movies of all time.

“The film, which cost $15 million to make, has earned $212,587,173 worldwide, which has helped it crack the top 20 of best-earning independent films,” they wrote

Forbes reported that SOUND OF FREEDOM even outgrossed big-budget movies like FAST X and ELEMENTAL, which made $146 million and $145 million, respectively.

Movieguide® previously reported on SOUND OF FREEDOM’s box office success:

Since the movie’s debut July 4, SOUND OF FREEDOM has made history.

The movie has grossed more than $100 million in the box office in less than three weeks.

The head of theatrical distribution for Angel Studios, Brandon Purdie, said in a press release, “There have only been 10 wide-release movies in box office history that have had a second-weekend increase greater than 35% over their opening weekend. All of them achieved this milestone during Christmas. Angel Studios is the only studio to accomplish this feat during the summer blockbuster season with ‘Sound of Freedom.’”
