Actress Lala Kent’s Daughter Inspires Her to Stay Sober

By Movieguide® Contributor

As actress Lala Kent approaches five years of sobriety, she reveals that her 2-year-old daughter fuels her desire to avoid alcohol.

“Sobriety’s the best gift I’ve ever given to myself, and I can’t allow my daughter to ever see that version of me,” Kent told PEOPLE.

“I am approaching [it] one day at a time, but I’m approaching five years of sobriety and my daughter’s 2 ½, so I stay sober obviously for me, because if you stay sober for someone else, that’s just a recipe for relapse,” she continued.

“But to think about the fact that my child is always going to see me in this form and never under the influence, you can’t put a price on that,” she added. “I am very grateful I found sobriety when I did.”

Her sobriety journey began nearly five years ago. After her father died in 2018, Kent turned to alcohol to help her cope. She eventually recognized that her drinking habits left her “unable to remember what happened the next day.”

“I’m beyond grateful for this path that God & my late father placed in front of me,” she said of her sobriety journey two years ago. “I’m grateful for my sober coach & my sponsor who I consider angels. I’m grateful for the program & the men and women who have shared their stories so honestly, giving me hope and inspiration to continue to never pick up a drink again.”

Since getting sober and having her daughter, Kent is “present for every single moment.”

“The fact that my child will never see me in an altered state, that’s just amazing,” she said. “I get to sit here and just remember her hands or the first time we went to a barbecue and she got in the pool. I remember every detail.”

“[Getting sober is] the proudest thing I have ever done, aside from becoming a mother,” Kent revealed. “My first priority is always my sobriety. It comes before everything— because without it, I am of no use.”

Movieguide® previously reported on sobriety:

Hayden Panettiere is opening up about her battle with substance abuse for the first time and how she got sober.

A child actor, Panettiere said she was just 15 years old when she was first offered drugs by someone on her team.

“They were to make me peppy during interviews,” Panettiere shared. “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction.”

She continued, “My saving grace is that I couldn’t be messy while on set and working. But things kept getting out of control [off set]. And as I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn’t live without.”
