Buccaneers Coach and Wife Say ‘God Has Blessed Us So Much’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles and wife Taneka are sharing how their faith has gotten them through tough times.

Their son, Tyson, was diagnosed with autism at 2 years old, and the family was afraid he might not ever speak.

“In that moment, I am just going to be honest, I was depressed,” Taneka told the Buccaneers website. “I decided that I was going to shut the world out and I was going to live in a bubble, and it would just be us, with me and Tyson forever, because that felt like a safe place.”

Complicating matters was Todd’s changing career — he was let go from his position with the Philadelphia Eagles, and the family had to move to New York after he scored a job with the New York Jets.

“I am blessed that God changed our geography. In that, it changed my mindset,” Taneka explained, per Sports Spectrum. “You know, you are in a different environment, and you are open now.”

Tyson even began talking — “We got to hear our son’s voice for the first time, and I cannot even verbalize to you what that moment meant for both of us,” his mother said.

“God made [Tyson] for us,” Taneka continued. “We feel that way and we know it. Todd even says it. He knows he wouldn’t be the person he is if he wasn’t Tyson’s dad. We get things like this happen because God has a calling on us and has a higher purpose for us, and we are here to serve that first and foremost.”

The Bowles family is using their influence to help other children with developmental disabilities. They recently helped open a sensory room at Raymond James Stadium.

“God has blessed us so much. To be able to accomplish and progress so much,” Taneka told WFLA. “To get to a place like this, where he’s like, ‘Mom, we can help other kids?’”
