Why Kirk Cameron Fights for Life: ‘So Important to Me’

Roe v. Wade’s overturn in 2022 was cause for celebration among pro-life advocates, but ADF lawyer Erin Hawley says there is much more to be done to protect mothers and the unborn.

“It’s just a huge generational win to actually say the words ‘Roe versus Wade has been overruled,’” Hawley told Kirk Cameron on his show TAKEAWAYS.

It is a victory that she said the Alliance Defending Freedom fought for decades to see. But the battle has just begun, as the overturning of Roe v. Wade handed back the decision on the legality of abortion over to each state.

“Alliance Defending Freedom and others will be defending these pro-life state laws,” Hawley stated. “We will be encouraging churches and communities to come alongside women and promote flourishing from conception through birth and beyond.”

“I think actually the work is just beginning,” Hawley told Cameron. “So until Roe vs. Wade was overruled, states, communities, churches were really handcuffed from protecting life, from helping women to encourage families to flourish. And now states are allowed and empowered to protect those lives, both mothers and children.”

When asked if there was a chance of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling for a federal ban on abortion under the Fourteenth Amendment, which guarantees rights to all citizens of  “life, liberty, and property,” Hawley said that there is “work that needs to be done there,” but there is a “history under the Fourteenth Amendment to protect unborn babies.” She believes that the key is to start with advocating for life at the local and state levels.

“[A] lot of liberal states are still permitting abortion up until the moment of birth, and that it’s just sort of outlandish, given what we know about babies and their development much earlier. So we need to promote a culture of life throughout each and every state,” she said. “We need to have these pregnancy care centers in every community where there’s an abortion facility, and we need to protect women and their children.”

Cameron shared with Hawley the personal reason behind his pro-life convictions, explaining that his wife Chelsea and four adopted children were “one doctor appointment away from not being here.”

“And if my wife were not born, neither would our two natural-born children, and so this idea of championing and celebrating and defending life is so important to me personally,” Cameron told Hawley.

March For Life is another organization that has been in the decades-long fight against abortion. Its annual event will occur on Jan. 19 and feature speakers including singer Danny Gokey, Pastor Greg Laurie, and former NFL player Benjamin Watson.

Movieguide® recently reported on the details of the event:

March for Life confirmed that Gokey and Watson will also be there. The singer and former NFL player haven’t spoken about the event just yet, but in 2021, Gokey shared a heartfelt message on his socials: “I’ve made it known that I am pro-life, but that means I am not only for the pre-born, but also for the mothers! I believe that God’s heart is for all to be saved – ALL are welcome.”

He continued, “2,363 babies are aborted in America EVERY DAY, but together we can fight for life & freedom for both babies AND mothers! Join me in the fight for those who have no voice by going to 2363.org and learn how you can make a difference by following my friends at @liveactionorg and @lilaroseofficial.”

Watson, a strong pro-life advocate, frequently speaks out about the value of life. In June, he launched a book called “The New Fight for Life.” In it, Watson talks about how the pro-life movement needs to be reshaped since Roe V. Wade has been overturned.

Laurie shared his excitement about participating in this year’s march on Facebook.

“Cathe Laurie and I are honored to be asked to speak and pray at the March For Life event in Washington, DC on January 19, 2024,” he wrote. “Every year since 1974, pro-life advocates have gathered to spread a message of hope and life for innocent babies at risk of abortion and to help change the narrative in support of life.”

This year’s March for Life theme will focus on the work of organizations that help women in crisis pregnancies.

A statement from the president of March for Life Education and Defense Fund, Jeanne Mancini, reads, “This year’s speakers will address the 2024 theme– Pro-life: With Every Woman, For Every Child, which is at the heart of the pro-life movement, in their remarks. We will also celebrate the heroic work of Pregnancy Care Centers and Maternity Homes, while offering a roadmap to how we will truly achieve a life-affirming culture that respects the inherent dignity of all human life.”
