Apple’s Vision Pro Headset Lacks Support from Netflix, Spotify, YouTube

As Apple’s new Vision Pro headset hits the market for preorders, YouTube, Spotify and Netflix have said they will not create apps specifically for the device’s operating system.

Apple has pitched its upcoming Vision Pro headset as the future of entertainment; however, this claim may be harder to legitimize, with three major entertainment companies refusing to cater their services to Vision Pro users.

“Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs,” Netflix said, explaining why it will not create a Vision OS-specific app. Spotify and YouTube are also shunning a Vision OS app after recent disputes with Apple.

Launching at a $3,500 price point, the Vision Pro could become a nightmare for Apple if it cannot provide the next-level entertainment experience the company has promised. Though missing some entertainment tentpoles, the headset will feature over 1 million apps created specifically for the Vision OS.

The current lineup includes Disney+, ESPN+, Max, Discovery+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, Crunchyroll, TikTok, NBA, MLB and PGA Tour. Users can also rent or purchase over 150 3D-immersive movies such as DUNE, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, AVENGERS: ENDGAME and ENCANTO.

Though markedly more expensive than Meta’s Quest headset, which runs as low as $500, the Vision Pro boasts a higher resolution video and faster processing speeds through the M2 chip. However, Apple’s dive into virtual reality remains a major risk as the technology has yet to find mainstream success despite being available to the public for over a decade.

The Vision Pro will begin shipping and become available for purchase in Apple stores starting on Feb. 2.

Apple announced its augmented/virtual reality headset, Vision Pro, during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday.

“Built upon decades of Apple innovation, Vision Pro is years ahead and unlike anything created before – with a revolutionary new input system and thousands of groundbreaking innovations,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said. “It unlocks incredible experiences for out users and exciting new opportunities for our developers.”

The headset will start at $3,499 and will release in the U.S. in early 2024. The Vision Pro runs on a new operating system, VisionOS, which Apple says was “designed from the ground up to support the low-latency requirements of spatial computing.” The headset has been in development for seven years.

Apple’s launch into VR and AR marks the first new product category that Apple has entered since the launch of the Apple Watch in 2015. During the launch, the tech giant presented the headset as a watershed moment in VR like the iPhone was for smartphones. The company expects to sell 900,000 units in its first year.
