What You Need To Know:
The overall quality of MEGAMIND RULES! is tainted by the quality of animation, which pales in comparison to the 2010 animated movie MEGAMIND. The big-name stars attached to the original movie (Will Ferrel, David Cross Tina Fey, and Ben Stiller) are not on the bill for the series. However, Keith Ferguson, Josh Brener and Laura Post do an excellent job as voice actors. Overall, Season One of MEGAMIND RULES! is a fun series with redemptive lessons and a strong moral worldview of good overcoming evil over the entirety of the season. There is cartoon violence, some insults, light scatological humor, and occasional politically correct content. So, MOVIEGUIE® advises caution for younger children.
Content:
Christian worldview of a former villain serving as a hero, with strong moral elements extolling good winning over evil, staying true to yourself, male hero has a budding romance with a female, doing the right thing, and making good decisions, and characters learn lessons about owning up to mistakes, the dangers of lying and show resilience, with elements of paganism with magical moments, some Romantic elements of being in charge of your destiny, a few politically correct comments about democracy and the environment, and some feminist where Megamind is treated like he’s incapable while the female characters take the lead, but in the end, he often saves the day;
No foul language, but there are comments like an incomplete “what the?” and “dang,” characters call each other names like “ding dong,” “party pooper” and “buffoon,” and there’s some scatological humor with words like “butt” and “fannies”;
Light and strong cartoon violence including explosions, characters fighting, kicking, various weapons, and some characters are in peril;
A budding romance occurs between Megamind and Roxanne, but there’s no sexual content;
No nudity;
No alcohol use;
No smoking or drugs; and,
Throughout the series, there are robberies, crime sprees, stealing, and villains who are bad role models, yet good always triumphs in the end.
More Detail:
The production quality is passable for a TV series but doesn’t have the same polish as its namesake. The plot of each episode teaches valuable lessons, and the creative storylines keep the repetitive themes from becoming boring and predictable. The voice acting is excellent, and the situations will keep children on the edge of their seats as Megamind solves mysteries and outsmarts the villains, episode after episode.
While MEGAMIND RULES!: Season One is a fun animated family series, there are several behavioral and worldview issues that parents should note. Characters tease each other and each episode has numerous moments of name-calling and some bullying. There is a focus on popularity and social media, as Megamind competes with the media-savvy hero, Dude Monkey. The show contains light moments of “woke” comments referring to the environment and jokes about democracy. Finally, Roxy is the mayor of Metro City, and a subtle feminist theme runs throughout the series where Megamind is treated like he’s incapable while the female characters take the lead. Yet, in the end, our superhero usually saves the day.
However, the series has a strong Christian, moral worldview extolling the importance of making the right decision. It also consistently asks the question, what kind of person do you want to be? Of course, Metro City is a town filled with villains doing evil shenanigans, which leads to mild cartoon violence and lots of comedy. Every episode contains explosions, weapons and general mayhem. Within the unfolding crime sprees, characters are robbed, and the villains make bad decisions, which are ultimately rebuked.
For the most part, MEGAMIND RULES!: Season One is an exciting streaming series that older children will enjoy, especially for MEGAMIND fans. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children because of cartoon violence, some insults, light scatological humor, and light politically correct content.
