THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy to Rerelease in Theaters This June
By Movieguide® Contributor
Fans of Peter Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy are in for a treat this summer as the extended cuts of the movies hit theaters for a major celebration.
For the occasion, Warner Bros. is teaming up with Fathom Events to bring each movie back to theaters for one day each. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING will kick things off on June 8, followed by THE TWO TOWERS on the 9th and THE RETURN OF THE KING on the 10th.
Each movie was recognized by Moveiguide® for its excellent storytelling and commitment to a redemptive story, earning all three a Movieguide® Teddy Bear Award®.
This will be the first time the extended editions are screened in theaters. Though they provide additional lore and action to the movies and are seen as the definitive versions by diehard fans, their lengthy runtimes were cut down for the original theatrical releases in the early 2000s.
THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING gets bumped from 178 minutes to 228 minutes by the extended version. THE TWO TOWERS follows suit, jumping from 179 minutes to 235 minutes. The behemoth THE RETURN OF THE KING tacks on a full hour, jumping from 201 minutes to a staggering 263-minute showing.
The movies will return to the box office, building on an already impressive legacy of a combined $2.93 billion total gross. Combined with THE HOBBIT prequel trilogy, Middle Earth grossed $5.8 billion from 2001 to 2014.
This return to theaters should help LORD OF THE RINGS FANS build excitement for the upcoming THE WAR OF ROHIRRIM, an animated look at the story of Helm Hammerhand, the king of Rohan. The movie will hit theaters on December 13.
Fans are also eagerly awaiting the second season of Prime Video’s THE RINGS OF POWER, which is predicted to release sometime this fall or winter. The show takes fans deep into the past as they experience the rise of Sauron.
Movieguide® previously reported:
New content for THE LORD OF THE RINGS fans is coming to screens in 2024.
Fans can expect to see THE RINGS OF POWER SEASON 2 and an animated movie, THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM.
“WB has decided to revisit The Lord of the Rings again in an effort to bring the franchise back to big screens.” Movie Web said about Warner Bros.’ THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM. “The first film of this endeavor is not, as you would expect, another live-action adventure. Instead, it is an animated feature that is visually inspired by many popular anime films as well as the live-action LORD OF THE RINGS films.”
